I really shouldn't be allowed to go to town unsupervised.
I needed to go put gas in the plow truck the other day and swung into granite view. There was a fellow in there trying to trade in a left handed 308. I told Cody that if the guy ended up trading it in to let me know.
He sent me a text yesterday saying the guy did trade it in and I had first dibs if I wanted it. I ended up giving him $500 for the Model 16 stainless savage with a 3-9x40 Leupold Vx2.
Rifles doesn't look to have been shot much. It is a newer model 16 with the accutrigger. I was looking online and the silver leupolds bring crazy money on ebay, so I'm thinking I will sell the scope and that will recoup most if not all that I spent on the rifle. I have a nice little vortex 3-9 I can put on it for now, but I'm thinking I will probably put a light compact 2-10 on it down the road.
I actually bought this rifle for a project. I'm on a mission to build a 6.5lb rifle, fully kitted with scope and everything capible of holding 2 MOA to 400 yards. I figured the savage was a good base for this build since they are easy to get parts for, and the actions are not overly beefed up like a ruger. I will probably also cut the barrel back a few inches. Basicy I want to follow the lines of Jeff Coopers scout rifle, but without the goofy forward mounted scope.

Hey JR! Great find and can’t wait to see the final project! I never thought Col Coopers forward scope mount would be very practical at all. Glad to know Granite view is still there and still in business. When I was there from the mid to late 90s it was about the only game in town for clothes other than making the 120 mile one way trip to Fairbanks.

Granite view is now owned by Ron’s daughter and her husband. It’s almost exclusively a gun shop now, and people come from all over the state to buy stuff from Cody.
I’ve been in Fairbanks all week working on my Peterbilt trying to get it ready to rock and roll after thanksgiving. I drove home to delta yesterday, but decided to swing by alaska Ammo before leaving town and get a case of 308 ammo. They had the Salk Super hammerhead ammo which is a bonded bullet and very good ammo for cheaper than any American ammo, in both 150 and 180 grain. I looked under the shelf and found the stack of 180s and grabbed the box off the top (200 round case). I didn’t specifically check that case, and didn’t realize till I got home I actually got 150s. Oh well, they will still work, but I prefer heavy for caliber bullets.
Now that I’ve got some ammo, I can go out and shoot this rifle and see how it does.

That’s really interesting that Granite View has turned into pretty much a gun shop now instead of mainly a clothing/ tourist type item store. I always had a lot of respect for Ron, he was always a super nice guy to deal with and I thought this was great! Some folks that had lost the majority of their fingers would of been mad at the world for the rest of their lives but Ron was always happy and positive!

I finally got a chance to shoot this rifle today in between trying to cut and split firewood.
I pulled the VX2 off of it since they are selling for astronomical prices, and will sell that and replace it with something else. For right now, I mounted a Vortex 3-9 on it, threw a bipod on it, and sighted it in at 100 yards off the hood of my truck. Shooting 150gn Sako Super Hammerhead ammo I put 5 shots touching with just the bipod off the hood of my truck, so just like every other savage rifle I’ve ever owned, it is boringly accurate.
My Peterbilt should be ready to rock and roll soon, I’m thinking this rifle will probably live in the sleeper.

That is pretty predictable for the 308, boringly accurate without the effort to get there.
