Anyone else here get the November American Rifleman ? There is a good article on the history of the trapdoor Springfield. At the end of the article in a section titled 1886 Experimental there is mention of limited variants and there the Marksmans rifle is mentioned. Some of you might remember a short time back I mentioned that I thought because of the uniqueness of my rifle that it may be one of those most rare variants. There is no elaboration on the subject just the bare mention of it.
They give a web address to an American Rifleman site to see more variants but when I use the address I get to the American rifleman site but it says the page I request does not exist. This is not the first mention of the marksman's rifle that I have heard but so far that is all I can find just the mention of it with no real factual evidence. I was really hoping to see a picture in the American Rifleman collection that might help indicate what I have so the site does not exist message was a disappointment.

www.armscollectors.com/trapdoor/I'll have to go and read through my books I have here. I seem to remember that they will built and given as prizes for the best army marksmen. Link provided with a photo of such a rifle. There are a few others I've seem photos of with engraved grip caps like this one. They are exceedingly rare. One sold at Rock Island Auctions awhile back for about 9 grand.

That one pictured appears to be built on an 1873 model because it has the 1873 rear sight. Looking at the front sight I see it has a hooded arraignment that looks different than the issue front sight covers and also different than on my rifle. The one pictured is the first I have seen with one piece pistol grip stock. All others that I have seen with pistol grip stock have been with add on either wood or metal component pistol grip. My rifle has the case colored metal pistol grip and has the model 1884 Buffington rear sight and 1884 stamped breach block.
