Today after bible study we decided to take a break from shooting and do something different. Last fall while at elk camp I met a man or at least I thought a man but now wonder. He stopped and visited me at my camp and we seemed to have a kindred spirit in our love for the land. I told him of many places in those hills that I was fond of and he seemed to know of every one of them. The interesting part is he told me about a small mountain creek that originates from a cluster of mountain springs . The creek is small and easy to find a narrow place where you can cross in one long step without jumping. He told me that people (clue) dont know it but that little creek is full of brook trout. Within a few days after that the mountains were snowed in and impossible to get in until now when the snow is almost gone up there.
Well we decided this Sabath day we would head up there and see if he was right. There is still some deep snow where it drifted but it is mostly gone and the road was open. We were just going to go for the ride but I suggested we bring at least one fishing pole and I had a tiny ultralight ready just for the occasion. We made it in without any trouble and walked a short distance from the nearest place I dared to drive. The earth up there is still very wet so it was easy to turn over rocks and find small worms.
It turns out the man or angel was right and the little creek is teaming with beautiful native brook trout. Within about 20 minutes I caught eight fish in about 25 yards of creek.
By then it was clouding up as it has been here lately and beginning to rain lightly. When wet the earth up there turns to grease and we had a rather intimidating stretch of very steep rocky ground to go back down to get out. This is definitely a four wheel drive only road and even then a couple short sections that have your butt trying to cling to the seat.
On the way back to the truck from the creek I picked half a dozen nice hard white puff balls and as I type the fish and mushrooms are being pressure canned for dinner. It was a great day!
We did remember the camera this time so maybe Tina will add some pictures of the area, the creek, and my elk camp.
