Today for our new family tradition we took our three Stevens rifles to Clark Canyon lake for our steel gopher challenge. Clark Canyon lake is where about a month ago I set up the steel gong target so that I could begin to establish my sight settings for the Quigley shoot. An episode with back pain put an end to that until now that I can walk again.
Todays mission was for our regular shoot of three rounds of steel gopher challenge which our youngest Ahralee won handsomely. Low score for the day was yours truly. We each had choice of rifles with the three model 44 Stevens rifles in 22 LR, 25-20, and 32 long. Ahralee always chooses the 25-20 because it has the lighter weight barrel so is easier for her to handle. I like the 32 long maybe because its the ugliest so seems fitting for me. Tina chose the 22 LR maybe because its the only one with a tang peep sight and she really wants to win. Np matter though because Ahralee smoked both of us with a final score for the three sets of Ahralee - 40 Tina - 26 and the old guy 15
The steel gophers are set starting at 30 yards and then at 5 yard intervals out to 50 yards. A shooting round is 5 score shots with each target score value of one point for the closest target then a one point gain at each five yard gain. Each target can score an additional point for shooting off hand. Targets can be fired in any order so some eager shooters start with the higher scoring targets, the nerve.
After three rounds it started to look like rain and I also wanted to establish at least one more sight setting for the 38-55 Quigley rifle . Last month we established the 805 yard sight setting so today we went for the 600 yard. It only took a few shots to get on target and log the setting. The 805 yard setting was 204 points and today we established the 600 yard setting at 163 points. After I got that setting and it was starting to sprinkle a little rain I said OK thats good we can go but Tina would have nothing to do with that saying I want to shoot this one too. By then though the wind was kicking up from the shower passing through and I had to keep adding more windage to stay on. Being the stubborn gal she is she couldn't settle for missing and just kept putting her hand out for more ammo. By then it was raining big fat drops and the other guns were still out so Tina went the 200 yards back to the truck where we parked at the 805 yard marker. Still we were not done shooting because Ahralee said she wanted to shoot the big gun too. OK I says so I put 30 points windage in the sight because now it was raining sideways. Ahralee took only one shot off crossed sticks and I spotted for her and her bullet strike was dead center fore elevation but just a tiny bit off to the wind couldnt have been more than a couple inches off to the down wind side. Pretty darn good shot for a first time long ranger and under the conditions. So we had a good family tradition day and I added one more sight setting for the Quigley ranges.
