Been about 6 weeks since our last venture to the big city and groceries were getting pretty scarce around these parts, so yesterday I fired up the truck and made the trip north. I had to get some stuff in town that wouldn't fit in the suburban, and the wife does't like riding in my smelly diesel truck all day, nor does she like icy roads so I went by myself. Had some time to burn between making my last stop before I had to meet up with someone, so I hit up the gun shops. I was kind of in the market for a new carry gun and they had NIB Gen 3 Glock 19s on the shelf for $419 out the door with a holster so I grabbed one. Of course, I got delayed on the paperwork, so I went and did my pick ups while waiting for it to come through. Get the call to come pick up the glock, and when I get there they were just putting a used Ruger SR1911 10mm in the rack. They said it was used, but it looks unfired and still had the box, papers and all that good stuff and the cold thread on the trigger guard. Im handling it and telling the owner of the shop how much I had been wanting one of those, and he says "Well, I'll let you have that one for $600 if you take it today. Needless to say at half the cost of a new one it didn't take much twisting my arm and I brought it home as well. The glock is a glock. Not much to say, it goes bang when you pull the trigger. The Ruger though is a real dandy. Beautiful trigger and shoots as good as I can hold it. Very nice adjustable target sights on it and really just set up exactly the way I like a 1911 to be set up. Ruger 10mm on top with my Ruger Light Weight Commander 45 and Montana elk stag grips 25 yard off hand group Glock 19 in holster

Handsome looking hardware there ! Have a good fried who is a pastor. One of his well repeated statements is, "Strike while the iron is hot".

The 10mm seems to be steadily gaining in popularity.

We tend to like handguns in caliber .40 and larger.

The 10mm seems to be steadily gaining in popularity. I bought the first one I have a couple years ago when I ran out of primers. 10mm ammo is readily available while 45 is not so I got a 10mm and have come to really really like it. I used my Springfield 10mm to put down a moose that charged me last year, as well as about a dozen moose and Buffalo that had been hit by cars last year following the storm. It penetrates a lot better then the 45acp does

I would dare to call the 10mm a magnum. Its ballistic performance is certainly in that class.

I did not know / remember that there is a 10mm magnum. Was at Starline looking at the status of some brass and there was the 10mm mag.

The first handgun I bought after joining the Army is a Colt Delta Elite blued in 10mm and it’s also a first year of production of that model. Dan is absolutely correct when he says a 10mm is magnum class. I still have two of the long skinny boxes of Norma ammo for it and supposedly this early ammo was loaded to 41mag specs. I have no way of proving that but I can tell you there’s a world of difference between those older loads and factory loads of today! Another interesting tidbit Junior, one or two years ago at the local police supply place they had police turn in 40 cal turn in ammo for $10 for a box of fifty, the Winchester Ranger brand, needless to say I bought the limit of 5 boxes and it shoots like a dream thru my delta elite! After shooting full power rounds it’s almost like shooting a 22! I find it interesting that for the most part the 40 has gone the way of the dodo and the 10mm has come back with a vengeance.I’m quite sure the older members will remember when the 40 arrived it almost completely killed off the 10. Up until a couple of years ago pretty much the only pistols chambered for 10mm were the Colt delta elite and the Glock model 20. Give those 40s a try Junior and let us know how it goes.

That original Norma ammo loaded to Jeff Coopers specs was hot. I believe a 200gn bullet at 1270 FPS.
Most of the modern ammo is the side effect of the government ruining good things. When the FBI started 10mm trials they found the recoil to be too much and had it loaded down to what we see today with the 180fn at 1050 fps or so. Of course, smith and Wesson realizes they could do this in the shorter case that fit the smaller 9mm guns and the 40 S&W was born. However it’s snappy. The 20mm with the “fbi” loads is quite pleasant to shoot. Load it up with some 220gn at 1200 fps or better and it is a completely different animal.
