about the 8x57 just when ya think ya know it all

Now dont I feel silly ! We are always adding different ammo to our for sale list and I have been thinking it is about time we added the prolific 8x57 mm cartridge. I have for many years known that there was a second cartridge with the same name but was a little vague on the difference other than the older one uses a .318" groove barrel while the most common one uses a .323" groove barrel.
Looking for an inexpensive rifle for testing ammo I found myself more that slightly confused. What I want is the most common 8x57 JS the rimeless cartridge using the .323" groove. What I have discovered much to my surprise is that there are three distinctly different cartridges that use the same 8x57 designation but with different letter suffix and they are
8x57 JS --- standard rimless .323" groove.
8x57 JR --- rimmed .318" groove
8x57 JRS--- rimmed .323" groove
The problem I am running into is that most of the sellers on GB dont know which one they have. I can see now that a whole lot of study on the subject is in order. I looked in the Donally conversion book for what can be used to make the rimed version and he does not even address any rimed version of the 8x57. Checking in the G. Nonte book he says 30-40 Krag with a lot of rim modification or the 9.3x74 both of which are awfully hard to find right now and expensive. I think I will stay away from the rimed versions and stay with the standard 8x57 JS that can be made from 06 brass which I have a bunch of as well as a good amount of S&B 8x57 JS.
