Turns out I have a weak spot for left handed tikka rifles and pick them up whenever I see them. This is a new one to me, a T1x in 17 hmr. I mounted a Vortex 3-9x42 I had laying around on it. I shot it prone off my deck today at 50 yards and was able to keep groups with 17gn Hornady Vmax ammo right around 1 MOA. Curious to put it on the bench at 100 yards But the range hasn’t been plowed all year. I attempted to plow it out today and pretty sure I knocked a piston out on my Blazer so the range is not accessible until snow melt.

Hydraulic Piston ?

No, it’s had low compression on #7 ever since I got it and would intermittently miss. Just a plow truck but whatever, but today while plowing it decided it only wants to run on 6 cylinders.

That does not read well. Quick "emergency fix" pull the plug, and release all pressure off those valves so that cylinder is not "robing" power from the motor.

Spring is about here. I’m going to pull the motor and build it into a 383 stroker. The existing engine is a goodwrench 350 with 4 bolt main.

Thats turning into an expensive rifle. I have never tried one of the 17 hmr rifles but people I have talked to that have them seem to really like them.

For me .22 bullets are tedious enough ! .177 Pellets are not much fun. But at least they drop down the "Blue Streak" channel.. But trying to guide a .17 into a case mouth ?

Unfortunately I’m not handloading right now anyway as I managed to shoot up all my primers about a year ago and have not been able to get more, so I’m stuck buying factory ammo which has lead me to getting into the rimfire again.

I forgot that detail... Are those little things available ? Could a person with the right sizer reform .22 LR cases to .17 and insert tiny bullets ?

Not really sure why you would need to though since the 17hmr is readily available. Actually, I can’t get loaded ammo for the calibers I shoot pretty easily. The 17 HMR ammo is 15-20 bucks a box. Also on the plow truck, I found several of my spark plug wires that I recently replaced were burned from the inside. Solaces then again and it irks running great now.

That was a lot more affordable than a re-build.

For many years I have crowned my Zastava M99 22 long rifle as the most accurate rimfire first I have ever owned. I don’t have my calipers handy, but this Tikka T1x 17 hmr may claim that throw. Best group of 3 fired from each rifle. 17 HMR was fired with Hornady 17gn Vmax 22 LR was fired with 36gn CCI mini mag Groups fired at 50 yards prone off of my deck.

Just got back from our 7am village service. And here's 2 nice groups looking at me. Super ! We have a 30-06 CZ that shoots everything very well. With "taylored loads" it remains the most accurate 06 we have owned. We need a new thread......

It would be interesting to see a longer test with a variety of ammo. The title could swing back and fourth several times then the average would win. It would be like watching the title fight between Ali and Frazier going toe to toe blow for blow then the winner declared by split decision.

I have 6 or 7 different Ammos to test in the 17hmr for accuracy, but I know the Zastava will shoot better groups then what I see here. This is a 10 round group fired with that rifle this past summer while testing a few different loads. at 50 yards off the bench.

Actually though, to be fair, I think the tikka be more accurate then what I am seeing here. I have a low end Vortex 3-9 scope on it and I was getting a lot of peralax in the crosshair with it moving around on the target even though the rifle was steady.
I suppose a fair test would be to use the same higher end scope on both rifles off of the bench

Still though those used to be cheap CZ 22's shoot good. I think our shop in Alaska was one of the first to have them when they were first imported as the CZ 99. They changed names several times since then. Remember when I used one to drop that cabbage thief shooting from the deck out to the cabbage patch about 100 yards out ? One shot and he dropped like a sack of spuds.

Good end for a garden raider ! How did you cook it ? Having fed it I sure would have chewed on it.

Although the first batch said CZ on them, they are in no way, shape or form related to the well known CZ firearms manufacturer which are built in the Czech Republic. The Zastava rifles are built in Serbia by a completely different company, and part of the reason they stopped importing them under the CZ name was a lawsuit from the real CZ. The final import version was the Remington model 5. Zastava still makes the rifles, but no one is currently importing tnat I am aware of which is a shame.

I got curious today with the T1x and how much the crosshair was moving on my yesterday so I pulled a Diamond Back Tactical 4-16x44 off of my AR15 and stuck it on the Tikka and shot a few more groups with it. It was jsut about dark by the time I got done, but this proved to be effective to cut the group size in half making ragged holes at 50 yards with the 17gn Hornady ammunition.
I've got to work on a snowmachine tomorrow for glenn cotton, but I am hoping to get the bench cleared off at the range and actually put this rife in a rest and test the other 7 or 8 types of ammo I have on hand for the rifle.
