This is the Miller (patented) conversion of the 1861 Pattern 58 Musket.. Numerous were made (2000 ?) so is not real rare. But seeing as I am set up for 58 Rimfire I am looking it over.

OK so you were able to find what I tried to link you to ? It was a trapdoor type conversion of sorts on the Springfield rifle but stayed with the 58 caliber. You had mentioned you have been looking for something like that so when I saw it I thought of you. I am out of the buying for awhile as I just yesterday took possession of an 1874 Sharps with all the trimmings in 40-90 BN. I would much prefer it was a 40-70 BN but it is what it is and as always I was motivated by its price tag. Now off to make many bullets to compensate, some of course being 40 caliber.

Nor have I. Looks like it would be a shade more effort to load.... I would have gone with a 74 Sharps also. Those are fine old rifles. 40-90 is a dandy caliber for big critters...

From what I have been able to dig up on a 40-90 bn with the original 1/18" twist for best long range performance bullet length should not exceed 1.3" The guys shooting long range competition with the 40-90 are shooting bullets as long as 1.6" but they require a twist no slower than 1/13" which is an awfully tight twist for black powder fouling control. Mine uses the original 1/18" twist so I have set my Tom Ballard adjustable mold to drop a 1.3" long bullet. Wouldn't ya know it though I am swamped with orders so cant get to the Sharps 40-90 bn right away. Our weather is not conducive to testing BP ammo right now anyway so I might as well stay warm by the stove and fill orders until I am seeing them in my sleep.

Well Dan so far I have passed on the several of those "experimental" 58 rim fire breech loaders I have watched. May yet buy one though. But 1st I need to make the brass and fire the Trapdoor which was a real US Military Rifle. But all that may be on hold as we plan to pull roots and move to east Arizona. Outside some small town where an old shooter / hunter can have a nice desert range to launch lead and wander about looking at lizards, snakes and following tracks.
