When we were building the house, pretty much as soon as the roof was on, I set up my reloading equipment so I could load 44 mag ammo. The bench has stayed build into the wall, despite my wife's dissatisfaction. Now that I'm home a bit more and working on the house, the bench needs to come down so I can do drywall behind it. So I've been loading every piece of brass and bullet I can get my hands on to have a stock pile of ammo, as I anticipate it being awhile before I can set up reloading equipment again.
So anyway. I've had about 4 lb of Winchester 500HS sitting around since we moved back to Alaska. Old yellow tin cans. Ive tried looking up this powder, but it seems that for one, it wasn't really offered on the American market, and for two their is virtually no info on the powder online, along with its brother 450LS that I also have a pound of. Everything I have been able to find online puts the 500 somewhere close to Winchester 231, and the 450LS even faster. I did try the 450LS in 45 ACP a couple years ago and found it to have quite a pressure spike, and kind of shied away from these two powders as I had plenty of other powders to use.
Fast forward to now and I want to load a couple thousand rounds of 38 special, and my powder choices are quite thin, and I haven't seen a pound of powder on the shell of any kind in about 2 years now. So I decided to give the 500HS a go behind a 160gn round nose powder coated bullet.
I found my note book from when I was studying the powder when I first got it, and verified that all the info I had found put it close to 231. The info I had found on the 450LS actually put it in the same place, but its obviously faster according to the testing I did with it.
I started with the minimum load for 231 of 3.5gn and its a very light load, but shot well so I decided to just run with it since it shot well. I started testing with my Smith and Wesson 586 figuring it ws a bit tougher then my wife's J frame.
Should be a decent plinking load, and hopefully the 2000 rounds I loaded up will last me until I get my presses set back up. Now, to load a few thousand rounds of 44 magnum.
