Watched a program earlier today about a guy named Claude Dallas and The Killer Cowboy. I don’t remember it but I thought some of you, especially the ones that have spent most of their lives in the west might be able to shed some light on what actually happened. Dallas was portrayed in the program as a modern day mountain man who pretty much lived off the land trapping and harvesting his own food from the wild. Sometime in 1981 he was approached by two Idaho game wardens, nobody actually knows what happened but Dallas, a confrontation ensued between Dallas and the game wardens and when it was over the wardens were dead. Dallas disposed of the bodies and went on the run. He received support from his friends in the community and remained on the run for a little over a year. He was chased by the FBI and a running gun battle took place with the result of Dallas being shot and captured in Nevada. He was sent to Idaho to stand trial for the killing of the wardens. The jury was sympathetic to Dallas and they found him guilty of the lowest charge they could voluntary manslaughter. The judge wasn’t having it though and sentenced Dallas to the max he could 30 years. In 1986 he escaped but was soon captured. He served the remainder of his time and was released in 2005. Does anyone remember this? If so is there any part you can expand or comment on? Thanks so much!

I remember it well as I was and am in the same general area. The warden brought about his own demise. He was over zealous in his work and tried to go beyond his legal limit. He had the authority to issue a citation for an alleged illegal bob cat hide but he was determined to bring Claud in and told him " you can go the easy way or the hard way and Claud took that as a threat. He had been disarmed but at that point produced a weapon and quickly shot both wardens but not necessarily mortally. His mistake at that point driven by adrenalin was to finish of each warden with a head shot and the judge so stated. There is a lot more to the story but that is basically what happened.

Thanks brother! Somehow I just knew there was much more to the story than the 45 min program I watched about it. It was titled stories of the FBI, so that should tell you all you need to know. I’m sure it was heavily weighted toward their view and not very objective at all. I’m sure it was much like most(not all thank goodness) of the programs I have seen about Waco and the branch Davidiations. They paint them out to be some kind of gun crazy cult that abused women and children. The best interview I ever saw about that interviewed the sheriff there and he brought out a great point. At the beginning the warrant they actually had was to go and inspect the estate to see if the living conditions were clean and safe for the children there. He said, if that was the case they should of had people from family services do the inspecting, not the ATF as they have no jurisdiction or expertise concerning the welfare and care of children. Just shows you how the media can play information or disinformation any way they want. Thanks again for the info on that Dallas case, as always I sure appreciate it!
