Hello all, I was just curious if anyone here has had any experience with applying for a C&R FFL? I thought this might be worthwhile to pursue as most of the weapons I’m really interested in anymore would fall into this category. I also understand that unless you have a brick and mortar “store front” getting a regular FFL is almost impossible any longer, I’m not stating this as the gospel it’s just what I have heard from others when the subject has come up in conversation. If anyone has any thoughts, experiences or just good information and it and the process for getting one I’d really love to hear what you have to say, pro or con. Thanks a bunch!

We have never applied for a C&R license but when we got our FFL for here in MT they required that it not be from your home and had to have a store front building separate from your dwelling place.

That’s pretty much what I understood, I’m envious you have so much “space” to stretch out and are able to meet requirements, although I think a lot of them are silly. I have a fairly large shop that is detached and completely separate from our home but I don’t think it would qualify because even if it did I still have to deal with the dreaded zoning laws and then they must decide if it’s a business they want to issue a license too. From what I understand things have really changed with getting an FFL over the last 30 years or so. Apparently the ATF wanted to get rid of most of the “basement gunsmiths” that had an FFL, I’m not sure why other than they just wanted less people to have one. That whole argument seems silly to me because anyone that holds a FFL has been investigated and vetted inside and out and qualifies in the governments eyes anyway as a “good” or “safe” person who is most certainly non criminal. I’m going to pursue the C&R just to see if it’s as easy as some make it out to be and hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised. It would just sure be nice to have some of the guns I’m interested in be shipped directly to me and as I said most of the guns I’m really interested in fall under a C&R anyway, thanks for the information!

i have a c&r license. all the rifles i buy are "old and decrypted" . i think i'd paid $30 or 35 for 3 years. the ffl check is anywhere from $20 - 50 per gun, i saved myself some cash by getting the c&r.

Thanks Todd! How was the application process? I just was wondering how much paperwork was involved and roughly how long it took you to get the C&R FFL

Thank you for posting that link. If we are ever in a permanent place here I sure will get one. Paying from $10-$25 per firearm over 40 years has not been a happy feeling nor cost effective way to be a collector.
