The carbine is one of 350 carbines shipped to South Carolina in 1877. Originally a .50 rimfire, but in later life was converted from rimfire to centerfire and the chamber lengthened to .50 1 3/4" (aka: .50-70). In doing the rimfire to centerfire conversion a spring return setup was installed for the firing pin. The gunsmith also re-case colored the metal and re-finished the wood stocks. Presently I shoot a .450 gr cast bullet over a not quite full load of 5744 powder in Starline brass. Having been gifted with several boxes of older Dixie .50-70 NIB brass, shall use this for black powder load work this winter. The rifle is 1 of only 2 rifles to be made, on 2 new actions by a custom rifle maker in the late 1990's. A lonnng story going back to the late 1990's, so shan't go into details here. Suffice it to say the 10 year wait for the completion, to me, was worth the wait. English walnut wood, with the checkering pattern copied form an original Peabody Sporting Rifle, and a 26" Badger barrel. From what all I am able to find out, somewhere between 65 and 85 Peabody Sporting Rifles were made by Providence Tool Co. in the 1870's? They are considered among the rarest of single shot sporting rifles of the late 1800's. Sporting Rifle 2 of 2 was also made with a new action (pictures later on sometime) and is somewhat nicer than the first experimental model shown in pictures here, the chamber on the second one is .45 2 1/10". I've come to favor the Peabody action...

That is quite a beautiful rifle! Probably one of the very few guys my age who is more turned on by a rifle like that, and could care less about a AR15 and the likes of that crap.

Greetings Peabody's are very nice to have. My 45-70 sits in the Danville War Museum while I am here. A 50-70 still eludes me... Mike in Peru
