Today, I was working up a load with B00 using some hitek coated bullets. Everything was going really well until I apparently hit the limitations of the bullet coating at about 1650 FPS. I went from a clean bore and good accuracy to no accuracy and a bore that looked like it had been nickel plated. I’ve got the rifle sitting soaking up some #4 solvent which I have found to be very good at removing leading. But it got me curious. I have two different bullets from Missouri bullet company, both 410 grains and both hitek coated. One is a small flat nose that is a smooth sided bullet and the other one is a WFN design with lube grooves. Neither one has a gas check. My theory is that I may be able to get more velocity from the Grooved bullet design since there is less bearing surface. I think I’m gonna have to play with this a bit, and see at what point with each bullet I start to get leading. Of course, a gas checked bullet with good lube, I would probably hit the limitations of the cartridge and rifle way before hitting the limitations of the bullet. Either way. I feel extremely guilting for leading up the bore on a rifle that probably hasn’t seen leading in longer then I have been alive.

If the bullet in the center of your picture is one of the Doughty bullets I sent they tested I believe at about bhn-24. That is hard enough to handle anything a 45-70 Marlin can dish out. What I would do to remove the leading is to soak and shoot one shot per day with the Doughty bullets. One shot at over 25000 psi will apply more scrubbing action to the bore than you can apply by brushing all day long. So the procedure is soak all day and shoot once for as many days as it takes to remove all the lead. I would guess 3 to 4 days would do it. In the future its probably a good idea to never push PC bullets over 1500 fps from that rifle. Something else that might help in preventing leading is that since one of your designs is grooved you might try lubing them for double protection. This is a subject I had hoped to study a bit but have not yet done. My days are filled with filling order for panicked buyers. Its a good time to be in the ammo business! We are not gouging on prices as we are setting our minimum prices as normal on our auctions. In this way the market sets the price. With the panicked buying situation with ammo the market seems to have gone insane. A for instance is we set a minimum bid price at $35.00 for a box of 50 rounds of 32 S&W short. The high bid on that auction went to $138.00 with a $20.00 shipping fee and they sell as fast as we can supply them. We are living in a crazy time where the party in power makes no bones about depriving its populist of the right to bare arms. This is creating a panic buying frenzy like I have never seen before even under Obama. I have never been one to squander my resources but I cant help thinking of the current market value of a couple boxes of ammo I might shoot on my day off and even feeling a wee bit guilty about it.

That #4 solvent I use is some pretty potent stuff. I usually soak a nylon brush with it and scrub the barrel and then let it sit for a half hour or so, and then start scrubbing with a good tight patch, and you can almost push the lead out of the bore in strips. Usually one dose will clean a badly leaded or copper fouled bore. I then give the bore a light cost of marvel mystery oil and it’s good to go.
I don’t currently own any bullet making stuff, but I need to get back into it. I sold a lot of stuff before we moved back up here, and all my casting stuff was on the block.

You are forgiven my Son. Your penance is to shoot only Bullshop bullets in your inheritance. Now go and sin no more.

It gave me a good excuse to tear B00 all the way down and give me a good cleaning and fresh oil. Some good oil and she just about runs herself.

More than once I have had to open the breach to see if it loaded after cycling the action. It feeds so smoothly sometimes it just seems like it didn't load but it did. I think it will feed empty cases. That is a comforting feeling when your in a tight situation that may require several quick shots. I think when I killed that grizz that Dave Daw wounded it made two quick shots almost sound like one.

Yep, it didn’t take long for this rifle to feel like It belonged. I do wish I could find a sight insert though. I haven’t been able to shoot groups with it quite a good as my other 45/70, and I am blaming that in the sight situation. I need to do some more research on what brand inserts might fit it, or have Andy at skinner sights custom make me a insert.
