Good afternoon Our Arizona son drew an Elk tag for a cow this year. Thursday he headed up to the Flagstaff area to sit in the bushes and one came along in his area of engagement. He sent a photo via facebook which my wife does. I will attempt to get it to my machine and post it. I await details also.

Looks like a young cow. That will be the best eating of any elk anyone could harvest. I drool as I type this. I am very much partial to young tender elk steak.

Good morning and Merry Christ's Birthday... I failed to write some further info on my son Steve thwaping his cow. Steve and his BIL arrived at their area two days before season started. Day one: set up the camp and relax. Day two: Scout about on a SxS 4 wheeler and check rifles at 150 yards Steve has a Ballistic 4-12x Leupold on a Savage 110 30-06 for this hunt with Federal 180 grain SPs. Day three: Opening day morning Returned to place where they saw day before several groups of cows crossing a wide long open area. Nothing in the morning. PM: Returned to the same open area. Set up on the side they saw the groups exit the trees to cross the open area. About 40 minutes before sundown a group of cows appeared on their side of open area and began crossing at an angle from their left to right at a fast trot. Open area was 309 yards across (lazar ranged) to about where the group was headed. Group did not slow until reaching opposite side where they stopped and browsed. Steve now knew range was 300 yards and continued viewing group while kneeling until he saw a larger cow on the left side of the group slightly separated from the group. She was almost facing the far trees so he had a raking shot on the right rear through to the front left shoulder which he took. Shortly after the shot he heard the "thwap" and saw the cow jerk. The group began running returning the way they had come from. His cow was quickly lost from view but soon Steve saw a larger cow falling behind. Rightly he realized that was his. Soon the cow slowed to a near stop doing a complete circle on the spot and laid down. Steve decided to give her about 10 minutes but kept the scope on her. Those 10 minutes later Steve started the walk across the open 300 yards. When he was about 100yards from the cow he noticed her raise her head but laid back down. At about 80 yards he saw the cow again raise her head. Steve quickly kneeled and fired at the visible target ending the hunt.
