This last couple of months have been quite good for my gun dealing, and today was no exception. We had our fire crew appreciation dinner tonight, and while we sat around and ate dinner, the topic turned to what it normally does when I sit with a group of guys, guns. So as we were talking on of the guys mentioned having a broken gun that he was sick of and wanted to trade off. So I asked what it was and he told me, and we got to talking about it, so after the dinner I went over to his place to look it over. Rifle is a Ruger M77 Mk2 left handed in 270. Wood stock. He said the problem was one that kept occurring and he was tired of paying a gun smith to fix it every few months. So I asked him what he wanted for it, and he asked if I had any 22 rifles. Matter of fact I did, a old Marlin model 80 bolt action that was given to me awhile back that needed some work, and I had fixed it up, and fired a box through and hadn't touched it since, since I really don't shoot 22 rifles, and haven't in quite a few years. So I went and grabbed it, and took it over there, and he looked it over and said "I'll take it". I askd what else he wanted and he looked around for a min, and noticed the holster I had my 1911 in and said "one of those, but in right hand". Well...Just so happens I had a right handed one that I had used as a pattern to build my left handed one, so I gave that to him and he said we were good. Not really a fan of the 270, and don't need one since I got a 308 and a 25/06, but this is the only left handed rifle I've ever owned and I have been looking for a action to build a 224 clark on, so this may serve as a donor rifle for that. Either way, I think I got the better end of this deal... OH YEA!! And the problem with it was the gun was not cock. A little adjustment on the Timiny trigger and it works perfectly.

Nice!!! If that is a MK11 it may have one of the Ruger hammer forged barrels which are ever so much better than the earlier jobber barrels. I have had so much trouble with barrels on the earlier tang safety models that it turned me off to Rugers. I think the MK11 with the side safety and silver colored bolt was the first model to come with the hammered barrels after Ruger finally accepted that they had problems with their barrels. In typical Ruger fashion investing in hammer forging equipment was a boon to the company. If I were you I would shoot that 270. The cartridge has a lot to offer and you may be well pleased by the accuracy of the rifle. I would expect to have to clean it first to get to the true accuracy potential. You might end up re barreling the 25/06 to 224 Clark and keeping this Ruger as is. BTW some time back I came into a bucket of Sierra jackets in 22 cal that are extremely long. I wanted to see what weight bullet they would make and adjusting things so the core would come flush with the jacket mouth I ended up with a 100gn .224" bullet. With about a 7" twist and the 224 Clark chambering with these 100gn bullets would be much in line with the old Barns QT line of cartridges. The Clark cartridge was becoming popular enough at one time that Hornady offered an 80gn bullet for it called the Clark bullet. One nice aspect of over bore cartridges of this type is that they do well with the really cheap slow burning surplus powders. These type powders are still available at about $7.00 per pound. Coupled with very slow powders and very heavy for caliber bullets this type cartridge is not at all as inefficient as some might think. IN my Clark with 1/9" twist I was getting 4100 fps with the 69gn Sierra which at the time was the heaviest 22 cal bullet available

It is a mark 2 with the bolt safety.

I actually have 2 sets of 270 dies for some reason. I have some brass, but no bullets. I have 10 rounds of factory ammo, so if I can find a scope for it I may go shoot it this weekend.

You did VERY WELL, Hunter. I am generally impressed with the Ruger Mk II Model 77-series rifles, and have 2 of them in the safe presently. Both are ACCURATE, one of them amazingly so for what it is--a whip-barreled 223 RL variant. The other is a 6.5 x 55 that dotes on 140 grain ANYTHING.
The 270 is a dark mystery to me. I have never owned one, and have only fired one example in a lifetime of being a gun enthusiast. Great caliber all right, but 30-bores predominate at my house.

I've had a couple of them. I had a savage 110 for awhile but I don't remember ever shooting it. The other was a Handi Rifle and I fired it may be a dozen times before I traded it off. If memory serves I kept 2 and half boxes of factory ammo when I traded off the handi rifle, but I can only find the 1 half box of shells.

Just mounted a cheap Simmons 4-12 on this rifle and will hopefully get a chance to shoot it this afternoon. All 8 of the screws on the rings were stripped out, so I stole a set from a cheapo set of weaver styles I had and retapped the holes. This Simmons has a lot of eye relieve, and even all the way forward in the rings I still have to tilt my head back to get a clean field of view, so not sure how well it will work. It's the only scope I had that's not on a rifle (other 2 ain't much better) and I've never used this scope before, so we will see if it holds up to the recoil of the 270. I have 4 factory federal cartridges and 7 factory Estate cartridges and have no idea what weight bullets they are. It will probably do better with handloads but my gun fund is spent for the next several months so I can't buy bullets, and I'm out of rifle powder anyway.

Went out and shot it, and although I can not say I was impressed, the gun has potential. I fired 2 of the federals to get it on target,a nd the fired the second two, pacing them about 3/4" apart at 100 yards off of a prone position (I don't own sand bags so usually shoot prone since it is steadier then the crappy shooting benches at the range). I then fired the Estate ammo, and was not at all imperssed with it, but I will blame that on crappy factory ammo. Once I can get my hands on a box or two of good bullets and a couple pounds of suitable powders, I will try it again.

Not impressed? It doesn't seem that long ago that a factory rifle shooting under 1 1/2" was something to brag about.

The Estate ammo only did about 3" over all. 3 of them were under a inch but the fliers were bad.

Buggered-up screw heads and trashed screw threads are among my STRONGEST upsets with a firearm I am contemplating as a purchase. Marred sideplate screws on a revolver to me = value cut in half, at minimum. NOTHING says "Shade Tree Gunsmithing" like marred screw heads.

Finally got my hands on some 270 bullets. Have a batch of cases in the tumbler now and then gonna load a few in the morning and see if I can't make this rifle shoot decent.

Went out and shot the 270 today despite the ice fog and must say I am quite impressed this time. Shooting the 130gn Sierras over 53 gn of IMR 4350 I put 10 rounds into just barely over 1/2" at 100 yards. So much for thing in this would be a donor rifle.

nice gun!!!
i was like you, what on earth do i need a 270 for? i got a 30-06 and 308 for heck sake!! i'll never own a 270........and then she shows up. i was at a gun show when i was drooling at a 280rem in ruger #1 trying to figure out how i can afford it, when i'm told from behind the counter, "its sold...but i have a 270 #1 that you might like." i had to pry my eyes off the beautifully designed stock and wonderful metal work to see this. wood work is ..well, plain. the barrel and action are well used, but plain. the rifling was good, don't look like 200-300 shots was fired out of her. the scope gots to go, but its really not a big deal.
i asked how much? and he says $400 but i'll sell it to you for $300. well i bought it figuring it will go as a project rifle. i never got started on the project, too much stuff going on, so i figured i'd buy a die set, some brass and bullets and i can take it out this year for deer. i shot 3/8" group at 100 yards using 130gr nosler ballistic tip with a max load of imr4320. it must have been a fluke, i load up around 20 of them and i go out shooting. well i'll be!!! 3/8" at 100 yards!!! this old (1973, i checked) plain jane gun can and does shoot deer. from 10 feet to 365+ yards. the old 270 has a place in my heart, right next to the 30-30!!!

I'm really starting to like this rifle. I had the 25/06 and the 308, so didn't really see the need for the 270, but starting to think I'm gonna hang on to it for a while.

the 280 rem that was sold went for $500. i've been into single shots since i was 13 years old. i seen a ruger #1 in 7x57 back then that i just had to have. but my plain jane ruger #1 got quite a few deer since 2008.
now i have encores in MGM barrels that go from 20 vartarg, 22-250ai, 6.5 creedmoor and 444 marlin. i also have a handi-rifle in 45-70. i also use a 30-40 krag 1898 spr armory that is also used as a single shot(use a redfield sight) instead of the five shots used.
