Recently acquired a mid 1980's Fox BRNO in .22 Hornet, then installed an older Leupold 6x Compact AO, in Warne mounts. May change the scope later on?
I've had 3 of the older, 2 made in 1949 and 1 made in 1954, BRNO ZKW 465 .22 Hornets, all of which were splendid shooters and a joy to carry in the field.
Back in the 1980's I'd read 'bout the Fox BRNO version, even an article or two where Ross Seyfried mentioned the one he had, but in all these years had not laid eyes upon an honest to goodness Fox BRNO, until this one was spotted at a recent g/show. Basically it's the same as a BRNO ZKW 465, only with fancier wood and a different Model stamp on the action. In all fairness, the currently offered CZ 527 is the same basic action, with some slight changes and a different magazine release system.
I have fired but 1 round out of this lil' Hornet (no, I'm not like Barney, only allowed to be issued 1 cartridge!). As this came from an estate, the seller wasn't sure if the chamber was original Hornet (5.6x35mmR) or if the chamber had been opened up the K-Hornet? He told me that among the reloading dies from the estate, there were standard Hornet and also K-Hornet dies. He told me I should fire it to determine the chamber, adding he'd include the K-Hornet dies if it was a K-Hornet chamber. He added he'd refund my money if it was a K-Hornet and I didn't want it - always nice to work with vendors that are honest and friendly. I managed to find a single factory .22 Hornet round in a box of loose-mixed ammunition on another vendor's table. Hopped in the 'ol pickup n' made a dash 10 miles north into the countryside where could fire off a round and not cause a disturbance. whew - it was the original factory .22 Hornet chamber! Would have kept it if it had been a K-Hornet chamber - nothing wrong with a K-Hornet - but nice to have it as it came from the factory, 36 years ago.
Yes, will be out doing some shooting in a couple of weeks, when making a trip into north central Washington State. My current supply of .22 Hornet is all factory, from years of obtaining a box here n' there at g/shows. Think I'm at around 900+ rounds on hand! Did I mention I 'like' the .22 Hornet. My other .22 Hornet is a Winchester Model 43, with a Leupold Alaskan 6x. On my 'Bucket List' is to try some of Dan's lil' lead pills and his load in both of these Hornets. Yes Dan, will keep this one so you can shoot it n' give it a workout when I stop by later on, k'...
First deer in the yard (at least the first one we've seen!) this Spring. The local game knows we don't bother them and they have the run of the place at their leisure!
Any out there among you that have or are familiar with the Fox version of the BRNO, would enjoy hearing from you.
best of regards to all,
Hombre
