I've decided that if I get the chance to do any hunting this fall, I want to go hunt deer with a handgun. Rifle does not present much of a challenge for me anymore.
Out of the handguns I currently own, I figure my Ruger Redhawk 44 mag would be the best choice. Currently the pistol is equip with Factory Iron sights, but I may try to fit it with a micro red dot before hunting season. I have one on my G34 that I use in USPSA and have learned to really love it for making longer shots.
Started working up some loads today. Using some 270gn Speer Deepcurl bullets that I had on hand, I started at 21.5 grains of H110 in starline cases ignited by a CCI #350 primer. This was 3 rounds fired at 30 yards.
Cases fell from the chamber when the gun was tipped upside down, so I increased the load by 1 grain to 22.5. Cases still fell out of the chamber, but I'm not sure if I'm going to go any hotter since it seems to be shooting good, and recoil is quite manageable.
Today was my first time really shooting the Redhawk. I fired a few rounds of factory when I first got it, just to make sure everything worked, but didn't really try it for accuracy. I was quite surprised how easy this gun is to shoot, and much prefer it to a blackhawk.
Going to play around with a couple other bullets. I'm wanting to maybe try the 225gn Hornady FTX since the cylinder on this gun is long enough that I won't have to trim cases to be able to crimp in the cannelure, and a pointy bullet may be a bit better for shooting longish range.
Probably got going to take a shot past 100, but you neve know how brave I'll be feeling if opportunity presents itself. I'm not a great handgun shot, and my current goal is to be able to get 4" groups at 100 offhand. Lots of time to play with loads and get ready, depending on work.
