Occasionally I have people ask about loads for the 458 Win mag with our bullets. I have not had a 458 to work with for a very long time so don't have any tried loads to offer. I do remember having issues with the SAAMI standard chamber with very long free bore.
I received this today from a customer and he said I could share his load data so anyone wanting a proven load for a 458 Win mag here you go.
""Back in mid-April I ordered some NEI 585gn DD hard alloy (linotype or similar) gas checked bullets for use in a 458 magnum. I am happy to report that load development with that bullet was successful. Two successive five-shot groups at 100 yds were 1-1/2 inches center-to-center. The load was R-P brass, WLRM primer, 39.0 gr Accurate 5744 powder, overall length 3.340 inch. Muzzle velocity was 1560 ft/s average for five shots. Increasing the powder charge further caused slight leading in the barrel. The rifle was a custom build on a 1917 Enfield action that I purchased about six years ago at the Bozeman gun show. ""
