i've been thinking about going up in grain in my 444 marlin(tc encore 23" MGM barrel), but i don't want the "kick" it has. i'm thinking alliant 2400(which i have several pounds of) could be the ticket. i know i have already done a 280gr lfn gc in 2400. what grain would i start with? does anybody know what grain(approx) i could end with?
do i need a filler? i don't have a filler on the 280gr, but i was asked too.

Not having a 444 to work with myself these are tough questions to answer. Generally speaking 2400 is not extremely position sensitive as it works well in reduced velocity cast bullet rile loads. On where to start as a powder charge with that 310 gn bullets in the 444 I can do no better than an educated guess which I will reserve unless pressed. I thoroughly tested that bullet in a Marlin 44 mag and settled on 1700 fps as a max for my rifle. At 1800 fps extraction was about 50% positive. The stamped steel extractor on Marlins is something of a weak link in comparison to the breaching system but it is also a very good pressure indicator of max pressure or rather the excess of. Conventional lever guns chambering conventional lever gun cartridges generally speaking max out at about 40,000 psi. When the Marlin extractor begins to fail its a good indicator you have exceeded that standard pressure level and need to back off. When the Marlin breaching system pops open with the hand lever no longer resting on the lower tang but has a gap on firing you are in a very dangerous place. With an Encore you have a 60,000 psi launch platform so are playing on a completely different ball field. My gut feeling guess is that the 444 chambering itself might add 500 fps to that max 44 mag load in a Marlin and still be at normal pressure for the Marlin. Since published load data for the 444 was developed in and for the Marlin I believe most published data you will find is going to show that 40,000 psi max compatible with the Marlin. The simple solution is to bring it here to BS acres and I will devote a day to helping you find answers and at the end of that day you will know for sure. I assume for the 310gn bullet you are referring to the Lee RFGC design. Its possible that you might find something from Lee Precision for that combination of bullet and powder.

i just got back home yesterday(i was in the hospital), so i'm sorry for not answering you sooner. my boolit will be either the 300gr fn gc(saeco) or the 310gr fn gc(lee). i was thinking(i really gotta stop that ) that i could use 22.0gr(2400) to start out with and go to 24.0gr on a 300-310gr boolit. tc encore and 23" MGM barrel 280gr lfn gc 24.0gr of 2400 1650fps +/- 26.0gr of 2400 1750fps =/- 22,800psi the velocity and psi was generated by quick load(which i don't have). i gave my friend's dad(70 some years old) my load which is 38.5gr of rel7 under a 280gr lfn gc. he has a 444 marlin(tc encore 22" vvcg barrel) also. he said that it kicked a little to hard, would i be able to download it a little bit. so i said yes i could and then i used 2400. his rifle shot 25.5gr of 2400(280gr boolit) really great. 3/4" at 100 yards (4 shots/benched: 5th shot he pulled, he said so, but it will go 1 3/4" at 100 yards). i have several pounds of 2400 that i don't use. i used to to load it for my ruger srh(44 mag) but since i've gotten a ruger sbh(44mag) and i found out that it just like 2400 but it luvs unique, so that what i go to.

Maybe pulverize some of the nitro pills and try that in the 444. Let us know if it works good and if so I might have to have a breathing attack too. Blessings on you !!!!!
