A while back I picked up a Marlin 336 that had been rechambered for 358 Winchester. Because of this, this is a gun I probably won't ever get rid of unless it's rebarreled because I don't want someone putting a 56,000 PSI round in a 42,000 PSI reliever.
So, the gun needs a bit of finishing up, and since it's going to be my gun, I'm going to start working on it and building it into something that I like a bit better, and make it a little more unique then a factory Marlin.
So this will be the thread where I discuss the things I want to do to it and show the work during the build. If anyone has any ideas for me or suggestions on how I go about the work, that will be appreciated. I'll get up some before photos of the gun tomorrow when it gets light out.

One of the first things I have planned for this gun, is converting it to a straight grip, as I prefer a straight grip on a lever gun. I also want to add a large loop hammer since I have big hands. Since I have a mill, I could recut the bottom tang and cut the grip off the stick and reshape it, or I could sell my stock and tang and buy the ones I want. Cutting would give me experience with the mill, but if I mess it up, I'll lose the money I could have sold it for. What do yall think?

One of the attractions of the 336 for me was the pistol grip.

That's another reason I can see in buying the parts, is that if I decide that I don't like it, I can change it back. If I buy a new stock I think I'm gonna try to fit a checkered guide gun stock to it.

I decided to try to go ahead and cut it. This was my very first time using this Mill (I haven't used mills very much anyway), so the cut is a bit rough, but I have to shape it anyway, so can smooth it when I file it down. I wish I had taken a before pic, but I didn't, except for the one shown where it is on the gun. Next, I believe I am going to cut and shape the stock, mate it to the tang, and then I will get started on cutting the lever apart and build a lever that's big enough to get my size giant hands into. I refuse to pay $180 for one from wild west guns, so I'm gonna see what I can manage to cobble together.

I got the tang filed down so that a lever from a 1895 will close with just enough room at the back for a piece of paper to slide between the lever and the tang. I used a file and a stone for the last little bit since I was not real comfortable with the mill and did not want to take too much off. Next I will be working on refitting the stock.

I just got a call to go to work in Idaho for a undisclosed amount of time, so this project is being put on hold for a bit.
