i guess it been like 3+ years ago i was looking for a new caliber that i could get for my encore. i had it narrowed down to three, a 338-08(338 fed), a 405 win and 444 marlin. the 405 win has been one of my favorites since i was 13 years old. old theo roosevelt bought me because of this caliber. i knew i should have bought the 405 win, but i instead bought the 444 marlin. now don't get me wrong, i luv the triple 4. and since i "discovered" cast boolits, the 444 is greatly underappreciated for what it does. from mild to wild, the triple 4 does it all! anyway, i didn't take the 405 win because of the lack of j-words. now, however(i'd wished i've known about cast !!!), there is a 405 win that is availiable on the tc encore.( www.go2gbo.com/forums/encore-classifieds/encore-405-winchester-barrel-for-sale/ ). now here is the problem. i've been thinking of getting a 45 lc in a ruger blackhawk( www.lipseys.com/itemdetail.aspx?itemno=RUBN44 ) for some time now. i've started to save up for it(gun, brass, cast boolits, dies...) but i have a LONG way to go. which brings me up to problem #2...i don't have enough saved up to buy the 405 win, let alone the 45 colt. i know it will be next year for the 45, and it will be about 2 months for the 405 win. (doesn't gubbermint disability give me a preapproved loan or sumthin !!!) i know that i am letting the 405 go, i know also that i don't "need" another encore barrel (have 5 barrels and two encores). i don't "need" another 45 because as soon as it comes in, there will be a 44 mag ( www.lipseys.com/itemdetail.aspx?itemno=RUKS458N ). my rant is now done. the money for the 45 lc will stay. its just hard for me to let a 405 go...

WOW! not an easy choice. I like both! I guess it comes down to another rifle or another pistol rather than a cartridge choice. I can tell you this from experience several times over that the 405 makes one hellofa moose cartridge. My moose loads were pushing a custom 410gn cast bullet to about 2100 fps and was like Teddy said big moose medicine. That load bored a clean hole through a piece of 3/8" mild steel set at 100 yards without bending the steel plate just bored a clean hole through as if drilled. Another plus for the 405 is that it shoots extremely well with the RCBS 416-350 a standard and readily available mold. I was sizing these to .415" for my rifle with .4125" groove and they shot equally as well as any of my custom designs for the 405. I shot one moose with the RCBS design as well. I did a batch of hard cast soft nose with my 410gn custom design using about 150gn of pure lead for the bullet nose. These loaded full tilt destroyed both shoulders on a fork horn moose. From that mistake I learned that only a small amount of pure lead is needed in the nose to initiate expansion. More that that is overly destructive to edible meat. On the other hand if you just want to shred stuff its real neato. I found that my rifle with .4125" groove shot best with .414" and .415" diameter bullets. Your in a tough spot to try and choose between the two. The only way to not end up having regrets over this is to get both.

i just wish i was working, stupid stroke... i would have bought the 405 one week, the next week i would order brass, dies, auto prime and shell holder(probably have some kind of powder). and the week after i would of had some of your 300 and 350gr. its a real tough spot to be put into, but i guess i'll have to leave it go. the 45 colt i want will be a plain old blackhawk or a convertable blackhawk. i can get 45acp by the bucket fulls and then load the lc for self defense and maybe hunting for deer. but that can be next years problem, i still have a 44 mag(still waiting) and your 250gr mihek hp to go. luckily(for me anyways ) i can use either mag brass or the 44 sp brass ....

I no longer have that 405 Win but do have a Ruger 45 convertible. I got the Ruger many years ago at a show in Anchorage in trade for some bullets. When I got it it had the barrel shortened to 4" but when the drilled the hole to hang the ejector housing the went too deep and it came out inside the barrel. They did a good job otherwise shortening from the breach end and having to shorten the ejector rod assembly as well. It shot quite well as it was but I had reached the age where the front sight was getting fuzzy with very short barrels. I sent the gun back to Ruger to have it put back to original at 7.5" barrel. I only sent one cylinder the 45 Colt and when I got the gun back it not only had a new barrel it had a cylinder as well. The problem I found was that the new barrel had a longer forcing cone and my old 45 acp cylinder wouldn't fit. I contacted Ruger and they said "sorry" and that they had not checked to see that the gun was originally issued as a convertible and that if I returned the gun they would fit an acp cylinder for free. Now the gun is original as far as the barrel and cylinders go. Being a fan of the Ruger Bisley model and having a Ruger bisley Vaquero 44 mag come in our shop I traded the aluminum Black Hawk grip frame, trigger, and hammer between guns. I sold the formerly Bisley Vaquero as a standard Vaquero and now have a Bisley convertible 45. The one differences between mine and factory is that mine still has the fluted cylinders of the BH where the factory Bisley has a non fluted cylinder. In my acp cylinder I load 250gn Keith type bullets to nearly the length of 45 Colt so can get nearly the same powder charge in the acp case. I seat the bullet so the case mouth just barely covers the lube groove and this shoots quite accurately at a much higher velocity that could otherwise be achieved loading to standard acp length. As long as I am doing the loading I am custom loading the cartridge to fit the Ruger and not a 1911. Why not, right! Maybe this is enough helpful information to help make your decision, maybe!

it helps, but i think i'm gonna cry 'bout losing the 405...
my dad has a firestar 45acp and my little brother has a springfield(i don't know which model, his changes so much it hard to keep track) 45acp too. now i do luv the old cartridges, always have, always will. i do like the ruger blackhawk with a 4 5/8" barrel(ss or blued) in 45 lc. i figured i could get a convertible 45lc/45acp that ruger makes. the acp can be for fun and the lc can be for protection/hunting. i'll have alot of fun with 45, esp clangin steel plates...
