SierraHunter. like the looks of the 260 gr JHP you're using in your 1911. Have you experimented with a 255 gr SWC cast in the 1911? I've not, but this summer sometime...
There is just 'something' about a 1911. I cut my teeth on the 1911 when I was 15 years old and no matter what other type of semi-auto I fiddle n' tinker with, I keep coming back to the 1911. I've a Colt Mark IV Series 70 .45 ACP that Jim Hoag did his "Police Special" modification on back in 1977, that shoots most accurately. Long ago (right Dan Sr., around 1980) a competition shooter I knew loaded up 500 rounds for me with the Speer 200 gr 'Flying Ashtray' JHP (Speer's Gold Dot bullet replaced the 'Flying Ashtray' at least 20+ years ago) over a heap of Unique, pushing it out the muzzle around 1050 fps. The hollow point opening of the Speer 'Flying Ashtray" was large/wide enough that you could take a pencil with eraser and the eraser would fit into the hollow point opening. This has been a load I keep handy should the occasion arise that I'm required to do some 'social entertaining'! It has worked well in the field, though since the bullet is no longer available over the counter, I'm kinda stingy of using them, preferring a Truncated Cone FMJ for most field use these days.
One aspect of the old Speer 200 gr JHP is that is opens up sometimes to nearly the size of that quarter coin in your pocket. Yet, when it is fired through the trunk like of 1970's era car (real metal, eh, not like today's plastic cars) the metal keeps the JHP from opening, which causes it to penetrate like an FMJ, and will usually reach the dash board of the car.
Be it a 1911 (semi auto of some other make as well) or a revolver (especially 1917 Colt/S&W or S&W 625/25/1955) the .45 ACP is most versatile in the field . . . or for 'social entertaining'. Hopefully none of us ever has to use it for that.
I'll side with Dan Sr. on how good the .357 magnum is with loads designed for the use it's put to. Yet . . . a heavy wider projectile, say .44 or .45 pulls away from the .357 magnum. Overall, as long as we're out in the field slinging lead, from .22's to .50 cals, that's what really counts!!

Well yea bigger holes are always better with one exception that I shouldn't mention for fear of sounding vulgar and sexist.

Here in Mississippi if you are allowed to own a firearm you can open carry or concealed carry without a permit. I open carry a 1911. And I regularly practice with it. I am not a Bob Munden but can get the job done. The thing is muscle memory. If you make a move enough times you will be able to do it without thinking. And not having to think you will be faster and more accurate. Elmo

Good morning Greetings Elmo ! "Mindless repetition" is what I thought of tank training. But it sure worked. Muscle memory is a good phrase to explain it. I also am very found of the 45ACP. Started at FT Hood Tx with me when 2nd Armored issued me a "rattle trap" of a Colt that was made in 1940. Could not shoot any type of group at 20 meters. Had the armorer work it over some so I could qualify with it. He had a "special" Colt all the tank commanders and officers shot to qualify. The rest of us "crew members" I guess were not expected to shoot anything. Happily Spec4 Fred did a decent job on my Colt. Our platoon sargent knew a tanker from WW2 that got shot twice with a Luger. Didn't hit any bones so tanker returned fire with his 45. One shot (must have center punched the offender) and the fight was over. That sold me.
Like Dan wrote "bigger holes are always better". But for CC.. I have to agree with no exit holes if possible. A 250 grainer of 40-1 with a flat nose at 850 fps+- should be a good choice. That is what our 45's and 44 Specials and 41 mags are set for during CC. So far never had one exit any doe we did a few test runs on. I trust I will never need to find out. Mike in Peru

Me too ! Statistically at some point I will hit my aim every shot according to the law of averages. I am still waiting to tip to the high side of that law.
