I recently picked up a marlin 336 that had been rechambered to 358 Win. The rifle started life as a microgroove 35 Remington, on one of the newer receivers with the cross bolt safety. The fellow I got it from had said he had a bit of trouble with ammo that was loaded to more then plinker velocity sticking in the chamber. Looking over a few pieces of the fired brass, I noticed a very obvious dent in each case about half way down the case. Inspecting the chamber showed that there was what appeared to be a cutting in the very bottom of the chamber. This was fixed by cutting a case about half way through with a hacksaw, and then spinning it in the chamber with a drill. Shot it a dozen or so times after the chamber fix, and it seems to shoot quite well. 37.8 Grains of IMR 4895 with the 200 grain RCBS put my first three rounds touching at 50 yards. Fired a couple more to get the sights closer, and then stepped it back to 100 yards, but only shot about 4" 5 shot group, but I will blame that on the fact it was pretty well dark and starting to snow, and I don't have the best night vision when shooting iron sights. Will hopefully be able to give it another go sometime this week in the daylight.

Howdy I serious doubt a 4" group will handicap you popping any corn cruncher. Sounds like you purchased a winner hiding in the brush. Just a little thought and work generally has helped numerous fire arms to become very usable. Just have to try the correct procedure. I do understand the quest for 'the best accuracy attainable". OK is close enough for exploding shells. But knowing that rifle will slip a lead pill through a narrow gap sure instills the confidence to do so. Plus a 358 Winchester will do in some big beasties. I popped a cheap Bushnell scope on it today and one i got it sighted in, I was able to shoot several groups in the 1-2 inch range at 100, with the best load shooting a pretty consistent .75" groups with the 200 grain RCBS.

That was a good buy, especially if those groups continue. With me backing up the buttplate, any cast group under 2" is good. .75"? I can only dream.
