AND speaking of that grand old Winchester Model 71 in .348 (in another Post on .50-70): one followed me home this past weekend!
An elderly gentleman stopped by my table at the show this past weekend and noticed some .348 ammunition I had out. He asked if I liked the Winchester Model 71? "Yes sir, one of the best Winchester ever had in a lever action." I replied. He then told me about a standard model 71 he'd bought new in 1955, but it's been sitting in a closet/cabinet since the early 1970's, not having been used since. He asked if I might have an interest in it? I told him that I would and if he would be kind enough to bring it in for me to look at, I'd be most grateful.
A couple of hours later he was back with it in for me to look at. It had had a Pachmayr pad added in the 1950's - which is ok, period correct doings that was; has a Redfield receiver sight - that was ok also, as they were factory drilled/tapped for such by 1955; did have 1950's period sling swivels - that was ok with me as well. I then inquired if the price he told me was still acceptable with him? He said it was . . . so we closed the deal . . . AND then he said he would go to his truck and bring in a paper sack and a GI .50 caliber ammo can with the reloading components that went with the rifle!
To my amazement: 6 boxes of Hornady 200 gr flat point bullets; 7 new-old-stock yellow 20 round boxes of unprimed new brass (they have a store sticker tag on them from a sporting goods store in Duluth, Minn, priced at $3.05 a box!!; 2 boxes of one time fired, or more, empty brass cases (40 in all); a set of C-H reloading dies; AND a Winchester grizzly box (box kinda in rough shape) 250 gr Silvertip loaded factory ammunition!! After he left I then pulled the 3 older yellow boxes of Winchester factory 200 gr Silvertip ammunition and an 18 round partial grizzly box of 250 Silvertip ammunition off my table. I had no idea I'd be suddenly thrust into the Model 71 arena this weekend? But ya know, that's ok with me!!
So before drifting off to slumberland this evening, shall re-read the chapter on .348 Winchester in the newest book by John Barsness, "The Big Book Of Gun Gack: The Hunter's Guide to Handloading Smokeless Rifle Cartridges" 436 pages. John stopped by my table this weekend and said the book has taken off with sales like he hadn't had any idea it would! Very nice reading, good loading information and discussion on rifle matters. Good for you John.
