Ok, not a hunting story yet, but planning to look for some snowshoes on Monday. Other than a muzzle loader hunt last year, I haven't been hunting in a couple decades, always trying to catch up with the bills. I'm taking a couple weeks off and decided to wander up by Cusick and see if I can still make meat. Dad's 1947 model 12 in 20 gauge needs a bit of exercise. We've had a fair amount of snow, but it's been up in the high 30s and low 40sthe last few days. Hopefully the snow is melted down a bit, as I no longer have snow shoes. Anyhoo, I stripped the old girl down and will do a bit of cleaning and lubing in the morning. Looks like I'll have to make a plug since the quail season is still open. I wish grouse season was open, but, oh well. There are two coveys of quail here, but everyone considers them pets. They look like dinner to me, but I have to get along with the neighbors. Hopefully I can report back on the hossenpfeffer!

Good luck! You're going to get out there and wonder why you ever quit hunting them things. Pardon me while I wax poetic. Here's a little something I wrote about a similar hunt.
I took a walk out in the woods, one cold and snowy day
Dad's old rifle 'neith my arm still looked the same old way.
Reminded me of when I was young, and the fun that we once had,
walking through the woods together, the "old man" and this lad.
"Not so old", I seem to think as I hunt on our old lands
Holding dad's rifle as I go is just like shaking his hand.
The gun has fond memories imprinted in it's wood,
Of old and simpler times, they were sweet and they were good.
Wait! There's my game! The animal I am stalking!
Bang goes the gun, I hardly hear it, and the creature is not walking.
I wish my dad could be here now to enjoy this days outcome,
But I see my dad's footsteps in the snow, and I am standing in them.

Thanks for the poetry, Tim. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's hunt. There are only a couple of fireams that feel right to me. A 1911 and a model 12 seem to fit me perfectly. When I pick them up, I feel a sense of wellness. I feel my Dad's pat on the back, dumb as that sounds, with the old Winchester.

Very nice. I always tell people decide if you want to shoot it or collect it. You can't hardly do both without getting an ulcer.
