Back in late August I bought myself a birthday present and got a Remington R1 1911. The gun was a pain right out of the box, causing me numerous headaches. The main problems were to begin with the barrel bushing was not fit at all and would cause to slide to get stuck about half way when the slide was returning to battery from fully back. Other problems included sights being loose in the dove tails, so I had to drill and tap them for set screws, sliding rattling enough to but the living daylights out of me, barrel was so rough inside that it would peel bullet jackets, and the list goes on and on. I almost sent it back quite a few times, but kept telling myself that I could fix it and that it would be good experience. We can skip all the gory details, and get to the point that I am pretty happy with the gun now. It has had about 1000 rounds down it, and I pinched the slide so it fits better and polished all the rails, polished the barrel and bushing fit, lapped the inside of the barrel, and did some trigger work on it. I still want to fit it with a ambi safety since I shoot left handed and maybe a beaver tail and a better trigger, but all and all it is coming together quite nicely. This group was shot at 15 yards off of a rest. Load was 5gn of Reddot under a 200gn Lee RN bullet sized to .451". 7 rounds.

Thanks. It was blued when I first got it. The blueing was terrible though, and after some reading online I found out the slide is stainless under neither (but not the frame) so I stripped it off. I like the 2 tone better anyway.

It looks good that way, and it sounds like you are going to be happy with your kit gun. That's kit gun as in build it from a kit, not tackle box kit. May I ask how long you have fiddled with it to get acceptable results?

Just about every night for a month or so. I'm planning on building another 1911 next year from a 80% frame on a tactical machining lower.

That IS a good-looking bottom-feeder. I too have resigned myself to the reality that a lot of new firearms sold today need to have their construction finished, or at least their near-completion refined a bit.

Thanks! This one really irritated me. I had been saving up for a Ruger, and had walked in the LGS with the intention of ordering one, when I saw the R1 in the case. The one of display was really smooth and very nice, so for the $200 less I figured why not. The one he gave me was a real PITB. After the first box the slide wouldn't return property and it was really rough, and the trigger was terrible. But it's coming along.
Video of the slide return when I first got it.
