I just got finished reading an article in Newsweek that said Vista Outdoors set a letter to all of its affiliates on 1 December that said starting January 1st they would have a across the board price increase on all ammunition they carry. The reason they gave was apparently there is a world wide shortage of gunpowder.
So if anyone here has been waiting or putting it off with the hope it would get better I’m sorry to be the one to disappoint you. I’m hoping it won’t be as bad as during the COVID outbreak but I wouldn’t bet on it either! Get it while you can!!

Boooo Boooo stone him stone the barer of bad news. We have been labeled by locals as "" The Wood Hoarders "" because of our large visible reserves of firewood. The firewood they can see but that other pile of cellulose they cant see.

It might not affect the older guys who were able to stock up, but it’s does affect me. I ran out of primers a few years ago and it’s been a struggle to get more, and 110 bucks a box when I can get them. Same with powder, about $60/lb if I can find the stuff no one else wants.
I’ve been shooting s lot of Factory ammo the last couple years because it’s what I can get. I’ve gotten to the point I just buy cases since the prices keep climbing. They will never come back down, availability will only get worse.

I shoot more factory ammo these days as well. Believe it or not when I can catch the ammo I want or need at the big box sports stores it’s almost as cheap to shoot the factory stuff as it is to hand load them. I also have the ability to go to the “cop shop” store where police officers and agencies shop. I get to go there because of my retired military ID card. Often I get boxes of 40 cal ammo a department has turned in for credit for $10 a box of 50 because once it’s turned in no other department can use it for duty ammo.

For me loading ammo and casting bullets is like a medicine. Its my comfort zone. It is also a source of pride to become good at a chosen endeavor. The surpluses it produces are frosting on a cake.

Other than some 22 LR/Mag ammo I have not bought factory ammo in over 30 years. I am blessed to have everything I need to load in abundance here. Even for calibers I have no firearms for.

""Even for calibers I have no firearms for.""
Is an incentive for change.

It was an experimental prototype from Winchester a 70 caliber. It looked like a really big 45-75 cartridge. The 45-75 was brought out in the 1876 Winchester. I have no idea what platform they would have used for their 70 caliber maybe the 1885 single shot because I think it was just too big for an existing repeater. Maybe they had a mega lever action in mind ?
I saw one once in a box on uncle Lee Penwell's gun show table . When I asked him about it he enlightened me to some of its history and individual round value which was/is way high. He told me he got it in a junk box from an estate sale.

Is Uncle Lee still flying all over the great white north? I sure hope he is! He always had a smile on his face whenever I saw him. Did he work on some Siamese Mauser actions for you or am I just imagining that?

Uncle Lee has passed. He built my 1886 50 Alaskan. I visited him once at his place. It was a grandfathered homestead within the Wrangle St. Elias park. He had a couple old log buildings with machines and a couple filled with old Winchester parts.

Dang! I sure hate to hear he’s passed on now but in another way I couldn’t be any happier for him and I think you know exactly what I mean. I just always remember him from shows mostly and as I said always with a little smile on his face and completely approachable. Too often at the few shows I attend these days I see younger people in their early 20s try to learn something new or even ask a question from a guy behind the table. Almost exclusively the dealer is usually rude or takes a look at their potential customer and just blows them off, completely ignores them solely based on how young they look.
One of my fears is if we don’t welcome the younger generations to our sport we won’t have a sport before long. The powers that be do their best and spend no telling how much money feeding the young ones all the standard lies that groups who want to take your guns always use ever after they are proven without a doubt to be false.
The other thing that’s really had me thinking today is what if the price increase on factory ammo and hand loading is all by design. Perhaps the grabbers are using a new tactic. I hate to say what all here already know but without ammo, factory or hand loaded is only good for a few things and none of them involve shooting. If in fact they are raising the price to try and squeeze out the Everyman from having ammo or the ability to make it, then only the wealthy will be able to buy the ammo and the components to make what they need. That sounds a whole lot like class warfare to me. I hope and pray that day never comes, I really do but it doesn’t cost anything to think about it and formulate a plan to deal with it.
