It shouldn't take too much memory search for most here to remember last years gorgeous WT buck taken with the just then finished Remington roller in 50-90 Sharps. Then the rifle was shootable but it sported a rather cobbled version of a sporterised military stock that was certainly useable but rather hideous in appearance. It served last years hunt but I hoped given time and courage I could upgrade its appearance to be much more pleasant to the gaze.
Last early spring at a gun show in Bozeman I took the first step and picked up a rough blank from a wood man. I got the cheapest low grade stock he had that was for a straight tang military roller. It is of straight grain walnut that had a couple deep gouges from an errant duplication machine but was priced accordingly. After the acquisition I put it in the closet and of fear of what I might do to it avoided it until recently I mustered up the courage to get underway if it would possibly be ready for another season.
Baby stepping my way through the inletting I got the job done in a far less destructive fashion than what I had imagined, not too bad even. With that small success to bolster my shakable belief that this could turn out well I moved on with the fitting of a butt pad and sanding and finishing. The end result has me believing perhaps falsely that maybe I can do this. Now dont laugh Tod because I have seen your work and this can not compare but for me I am satisfied and even a bit proud that I didnt convert a potential rifle stock to fire wood.
Being now ready for another season I was ready to start shooting it again so today did exactly that with anxious excitement. The target results are more than satisfying. The target I will ask Tina to post a picture of was fired at 100 yards bench rest. The load is with a 600gn NEI paper patch bullet patched to .509" and loaded over a duplex smokeless load of 9gn of IMR-4895 kicker under 63.5gn of WC-870 sparked by a Federal 215 mag primer. The results will make any shooter smile.
The tang hunting sight is the one I got from the man that had previously imported sights from Ukraine now living in Canada. On inquiry he said he had enough parts to put a hunting sight together for me for which I happily accepted his very reasonable pricing of $90.00.
Its a pretty complete package now ready for another hunt, maybe an elk this year!
