Good morning The soft cast .518 (my choice) 450 grain beauties were finally sent down range from our 1870 Trapdoor about 2 weeks later than I thought. Propelled by 60 grains of 3F Goex with cereal box wad on top of the powder the first round down was within 1 inch of the rifle's battle sight with me sitting at 25 yards. Sent two more soon after all three forming a tight cloverleaf. Backed up to 50 yards and repeated the same process of 3 rounds with another cloverleaf with the edges touching. Started raining so I stopped the shooting. Two days later had other loads with 21 grains of Buffalo Rifle under the same cast. Fired from 50 yards with the same impact spot 1 inch to the right of my aiming spot and a very near identical cloverleaf. Recoil is about 20% less than the 3F load so may try 22 grains of Buff Rifle next trip. Soon had 4 other shooters watching and each had a chance at it. First feller had never fired an "old rifle" so was big smiling after 3 shots standing. The other 3 shooters fired only one round each. Everyone hit the paper near the inverted "T". They all agreed even a 150 year old rifle would easily still be an adequate deer rifle at the 50 yards we were shooting. Next time out I will remember my cross sticks and move to 100 yards. I have not yet mastered posting pictures from a camera on Lenux but maybe one day. I am very happy with the rifle and Dan's slugs.

This story with a happy ending makes my heart soar. After being stranded away from your family for so long it brings me a smile to hear of you getting some quality time with your son. And in some small way to also be a part of it is just frosting on the cake. Sounds like you guys got yourselves a fine old Springfield that will become a part of many memories. Blessings come in all shapes, sizes, and colors with the complexities of a moon landing or the simplicity of a Springfield trapdoor. Enjoy !

I should have also added that when our son first saw the brass and cast his eyes got very big and said... Dad you are going to shoot it first! Big 6'-2" young-un acting like it was an old "knock-em down" Buff rifle ! But I guess when your last 10 years rifle shooting was nothing larger than an 06 or 303 than a 50-70 would look rather largish. So thank you Dan !! As soon as I can find our 03 action I will get our new Shaw 257 Roberts barrel attached, finish reamed and mounted in a sporter stock. Then off to the range to launch those .258 long lead pills you made near 3 years ago.
