i tried a military stock and it came out all right. i did steam out all of the scratches and dents and i did use an oil paste coat filler. if you want to strip a stock, try citristrip. i take the stock and slather it with citristrip and i put the stock down an the heel and fore-end(upside down for those of us who have to look it up!!!! ) on a sheet of aluminium foil. then places grocery bags(3 or 4) on top of stock. i wait 24+/- hours, then i wipe it off using paper towels and two or three squirts of mean green. repeat if necessary. i never have to do it a 3rd time. www.citristrip.com/www.rustoleum.com/product-catal ... ti-purpose to finish the stock: 1. steam out the scratches 2. 400 grit sand paper over the entire stock 3. 4 ought steel wool over the entire stock 4. wipe it down with tack cloth 5. min-wax antique oil(3 - 7 coats, depends on your taste) 6. (optional) pumice stone over the entire stock 7. (optional) rotten stone over the entire stock sorry about the picture this is a 93 spanish mauser stock(1924 i think). its now on step 5 and i'm waiting for it to dry(final 4th coat). i'm on the fence to do step 6 and 7. i did a dark walnut oil paste coat to fill up some of the scratches (2 coats). (to use in between step 2 and step 3) all in all, instead of throwing the military gun stock away and making/buying a new one, use it. you'll be satisfied it did, i am.

Now if we could only find a rejuvenating elixir that could make us like new again. I have tried the type that is sold in 1/5 gallon volume but the temporary perceived rejuvenating quality has some seriously unkind side effects that only seem to compound the original problem.

Good morning Looks presentable to me !! May be so slick it will slide right off your hand. We have a Shaw 257 Roberts 26" barrel sitting waiting to get attached on an 03 receiver right now. They still have good prices for a ready to attach barrel that is short chambered. No slots for iron sights so that makes attachment simple. Will end up a swap barrel rig but other caliber is not yet decided... Maybe a 358 Winchester Give them a call though as they are a bit behind with deliveries. Ordered ours Feb 01 and received it in November. But we are still #19 stuck here so no issue.

and then my wood werking skills(little to next to none) are going to a 93 mauser Apache gold stock. then its either a 1898 spr armory (2 actions & 2 rifles) or a 95 Chilean navy mauser(action) or 91 sporterized argentine mauser or a sporterized 6.5 carcano.

Tod my friend I have to say that you have now created a dilemma in that the stock now looks to nice for what is in it. You know what I mean that the contrast is now acute. Something needs to be done. You cant just put an ugly duckling barreled receiver in such a meticulously finished stock as it makes it look broken. Only saying this because I love you man !

i love you too, man!!!! the 93 mauser stock is going to be 257 bob, when i'm done with the other 3 rifles. the 98 mauser is going to have to be reblued(sporterized including a redfield aperture). the Apache gold (another 93 mauser) is going need my wood werkin(little to none ) needs a 7x57 douglas barrel, it has a bent bolt, 2 position safety, d&t, scope mounts and a dayton trigger kit. then.......i have to do either a 22 hornet or a 9.3 krag in 1898 spr armory. now if not my president sniffy joe , gets me $2000, as he promised, i'll be good on the rifles. NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Todd, you have way more patience than I do, plus, I never liked woodworking in school, so I have to hire someone to do any remodeling.

Todd, you have way more patience than I do, plus, I never liked woodworking in school, so I have to hire someone to do any remodeling. i used to be a hurry up and git it done guy. then i had stroke and and it was and is difficult to do it one left hand( i was a righty but left eye dominant). richard's gun stock is a place i like, they give you a gun stock and you are supposed to sand and finish it. if i were to do gun stock form the blank to the finish, i'd still be whittling on wood!!!!! i found out(what dad did tell me) when i'm werkin on something and it makes me mad(putting tab a into slot b), i quit doing for awhile. i can go 10 hours or i can go 2 hours, depends on how mad it will make me. i try to do 3 or 4 hours on the gun every day. my wood werkin skills are about rough finish carpenter. but when it comes to finish carpenter, it ain't me.

well, i had to citristrip my 98 mauser stock. i didn't use bartley oil filler (dark) when i should have. the rotten stoning process leaves me with dents but it takes off the high spots. i could have left the grain filler in, but it ain't right. so i'll citristrip it and do an oil filler with mineral spirits to fill the grain. when thats done, i'm going use minwax antique oil finish instead of linspeed oil (i don't the like the time the linspeed requires). oh well, you live, you learn.

I had one of those that I bought back in the 1960's, that was in mint condition that I bought out of a collection. I kept it about 10 years, & sold it to another serious collector, who wasn't going to even shoot it.

I would leave it alone. I have seen numerous old military stocks that were not improved in any way by sanding them.

320 grit wasn't what i needed, i needed 220 grit to take off the black linseed oil. i used 2/3 of a sheets of 220 grit. the black gunk left on the sandpaper was worthless. i then did a steel bristle on the sandpaper every few seconds. (sand for few seconds, then bristle the sandpaper, sand for a few seconds......) i got most of the black linseed oil off of the stock(5 hours) and then i started the 320 grit. then 400 grit AND then bartley wood dark filler. when that is done, then its back to the 400 grit. then i'll 4 ought steel wool it and THEN i'll do minwax antique oil. after 3 or 4 coats, then i'll let it sit for 3 or 4 weeks......and THEN it's 2 coats johnson's paste wax.
