I bought a Werndl carbine not knowing it has been rechambered. I have worked a 45/70 down to fit the chamber and the twist is 1/20.375 in a 22 inch barrel. A .452 will not fill the bore completely and would like to use a pure lead bullet. You can see a good lands cut with excess lead starting to migrate into the groves but the groves are still .452. I would like a RN GC in pure lead around 300gr in 456-458. What would you recommend. Thanks

You should brows our list at bullshop.weebly.com by scrolling to the -more- icon at the top right of the page. Our RCBS 45-300 FNU might work. Also some of our listings for 45 handgun will drop at .456" to .457"

I would highly recommend doing a chamber cast to know for sure what you have. From what I find that should be a 11.15x36R Cartridge. 7.62x54 sees to be the case to make them from If you have a .452 groove you need to do the investigating first unless all you want to do is pop off some rounds. Remember you are dealing with a BP carbine and that is what I would be stuffing in that chamber. Just my 2 pennies worth.

I have both 45/70 and 7.62x54 cases feeding in the Werndl Carbine and have hit another problem. They are both trimmed to 35.85mm. Although .452 (.14BHN) does not fill the bore completely, maybe a pure lead will or a .454 pure will, my problem now is after seating a .452 in the 7.62 it will only feed 3/4 of the way into the chamber and measures .484 at the mouth. The 45/70 will feed using the .452 and the outside mouth diameter measures .478 and hopefully fills the bore with pure lead, if not maybe .454 will without expanding the case too much and not feeding
I have done a chamber cast

Maybe case neck turning is in order ? A neck turner that is set to remove .001" in case wall thickness which is not much will reduce your case neck diameter by .002" which could help alleviate your problem. It sounds like with your Nagant brass you need to reduce neck wall thickness by .0025" to get it to the 45-70 brass dimensions. I will also refer you to a new bullet design we have just added to inventory. www.gunbroker.com/item/887293600This hollow base design sized to your specs might help.

I don't really want to neck turn unless absolutely necessary, do you think a .451 skirted bullet will fill up to a .458 bore

I will answer with an example, Original Sharps 45 caliber rifle ammo used a bullet diameter of apx. .444" to .446" patched to .451" to .452" diameter to be fired in barrels with a .457" to .458" rifling groove diameter. So loaded in about a single decade these rifles exterminated the millions of American bison that roamed the western prairies. In short yes when cast in an appropriately soft alloy.

Are the “Vintage Yankee 255gr” the same as you are offering on GB, if so would you recommend using a softer alloy for my needs to get a .451 to fill a possible .458 bore

Yes I would. If you are shooting black powder or low pressure smokeless powder loads not exceeding about 1300 fps I would suggest pure lead.
