Was out testing some 44 mag loads today, and decided to try shooting off of a sandbag. I’ve tried this in the past, and have always had crappy results. For whatever reason. I can shoot groups half the size shooting offhand, at the same distance, and today was no different.
So, what am I doing wrong? Everything seems steady. I’ve tried several types of bags and rest, but alas I always end up getting terrible groups, but I can take the same gun and ammo and shoot decent groups off hand. Story is the same with revolvers or bottom feeders, and even my contender.
Frustrating to say the least. Any ideas?

Were you resting the handgun on the bag ? Try resting your forearms on the bag.

Stick with rifles and give the revolvers to your Dad. Its good to have a wider range of helpful ideas to choose from.

Sometimes there is a subconscious link. If you believe something to be so sometimes and I am guilty but sometimes we can subconsciously rig the results and not realize we did.

It’s a bit irritating to me. I have put this gun in a ransom rest before and know how well it can shoot, but I can’t shoot any of my hand guns off a rest very well, and I’m not a good enough shot off hand to use those groupings for accuracy test for articles.

Have someone else load the handgun with blanks and live ammo randomly. Pay close attention where your sights are when the trigger breaks. I learned alot about some bad habits I had even with a rest. When I use cross sticks I have to concentrate 2-3s more as I tend to trust the sticks for accuracy.
