I recently traded back for a 22 rifle I owned in my youth, a Charles Daily Superior ||, better known as the Zastava MP22. This rifle left a unhealthy view in my young head of how accurate a 22 rifle should be, and I’ve never found another I was happy with. I may have shed a happy tear on the way home from buying it back. Anyway. Writing a article featuring this rifle and was doing some ammo testing. I tested 4 types of cheap ammo, firing 5, 5 shot groups With each at 25 yards from a rest, in temps that were reading minus 14. The ammo that really disappointed me was the Federal Champion bulk pack ammo. Ive shot countless bricks of this ammo as a kid and it used to be quite good. Unfortunately, this ammo seems to have came downhill in quality, as my average group size was a measly 2.211” However the other three ammos I tried, all produced great results with a 15 group average of .434”. The Remington thunderbolt ammo really surprised me shooting a average of .504”. I also have a couple bricks of Canadian imperial ammo, which I have always thought was complete crap. The cases will split on most shots, often times rupturing the rim, and spitting gas back into your face. However, on paper it proved to be the best ammo, shooting a average of .386” and the smallest overall group of .216” http://instagram.com/p/CHJl966J2sM

Also known as the CZ model 99, great rifles. They used hammer forged barrels that are superbly accurate. Remember the moose that was eating our cabbage ?

When we have a mind to look for a used rifle Zastava / CZ are the first that get typed into the search box. Still have our first Zastava bought in Chattanooga in 78. Still our most accurate 30-06.

Had a few extra minutes between jobs today, so grabbed my Ruger MK 4 bull barrel and stepped outside. No scientific testing here, but just plinking I noticed that the federal ammo was substantially less accurate from the mk4 as well. I’m curious to run these test again when it is warmer in the spring and see how the ammo reacts then.

And while we are popping off about the wonderful 22 rimfires What kind of accuracy have you seen firing .22 long rifles in 22 mag barrels ??

I’ve never actually tried that to be honest.

It seems there is alot of reported .22 long rifle case splitting as the the .22 mag chamber is a bunch more larger in diameter. Makes sense but never have read about accuracy. I guess I should add that one to y growing list of "give this a try".

i gave my neighbor about 500-600 22 mag. they were my grandfather's, but i think he sold the 22 mag rifle a while ago(1980s?). i never had a 22 mag but i shot them(for squirrels and groundhogs). i have a marlin m25 that is accurate. i could do a 7 shot group that would be under a quarter(.25 cent piece) at 50 yards. i was using a cci stinger? (32gr or 36gr truncated hp) back then(bigggggggggg spender ). i kept them for squirrels. remington, winchester, federal box bullets(500 pcs) were for anything else. i have a ruger 10/22 that is around 2" at 50 yards. a 36gr federal hp is what i use now. when thats done, then its a remington bullet and finally a winchester. i don't shoot the 22lr much anymore. its been a 20 vartarg for years now. btw, i bought a mossberg 22lr and gave it to my youngest son(must be 11 or 12 years ago) and that dang black plastic thing with a 4x cheap scope is accurate!!! i think it was about 11 years ago when i and my sons were getting ready to shoot deer. we were up at the shop and the range was 100 yards. when we were done shooting, my youngest(who couldn't go deer hunting) son said something like, dad, you shoot my gun now. well, i did. at 100 yards!!!! 10 shots fom remmy ammo go about 1 1/4". that danged black plastic and danged short barrel and danged 4x cheap scope could do a 1 1/4" at 100 yards. i was and still am, amazed. i bought the mossberg for his birthday and he sighted it in at 25 yards and then 50 yards. we go out shooting our 22's and it never occurred to me, that he had an accurate rifle. dahhh me .
