I have a customer that is doing some competitive shooting with a 30-30. Last year we chatted a bit on the subject and I suggested the RCBS 30-180 fngc as a design that has worked good for me in the 30-30.
Today I received some interesting feedback from him and with his permission will share here because there are some gems here for 30-30 shooters and cast bullets in general.
part 1
Dan, I would like to order 200 more of the rcbs-180 fp 30 caliber. gas checked and lubed weigh 198
I forget how I paid you for bullets last year. check before? after they arrive? can't recall just let me know.
they seemed to shoot fairly well last year at 100 meters, but I never tested longer range. I had some jacketed bullets to use up, so I did that last fall.
I am having trouble with mild jacketed loads...first shot cold barrel is 120 to 200 fps slow. Every time. This does not happen with cast (lubed or hi tek) bullets. I do still see a slow first shot with copper plated lead like berrys. Most of that experimentation was done with my 357 and 32-20 rifles but my 30-30 does it also. I may wind up shooting all lead in silhouette from here out.
It is a long slow experimenting process, setting up the chrono for two or three shots every day beside the house! but over time I repeated this effect back and forth.
two of us (in two states) are trying some Buffalo powder from Shooters World. It seems to work fine, but it is quite a bit slower than the 5744...folks say it is 'the same as' 5744. in our mild 30-30 loads it burns closer to 3031 speed.
I had good accuracy in the 30-30 with win760 and RL-16 last year. not top speed but a case full of powder. maybe 1750 or 1800 ballpark. recoil was there, but had a little different feel compared to a full load of varget or 4895 I liked 4198 behind that rcbs180 last summer, but may go to a case full of slow powder this year to avoid position issues/concerns.
