Hi Daniel. Today, I went to a local gun show, & in talking with a vendor about my .30 carbine, & about reloading ammo for it to shoot at Camp Perry in July, he told me that he uses Hodgkin's "Lil Gun" powder that was developed for the .410 shotgun. He showed me a loading chart with powder charges listed for various calibers & bullet types & weights. He uses a Speer 100 gr. jacketed bullet, with just under max powder charge, that he has had very good results with. I asked if it was position sensitive, & he said that it nearly fills the case, & doesn't leave unburned powder residue in the barrel, therefore it's not an issue for the gas piston.
I just copied the reloading data from Hodgdon's site for both the Speer 100 gr. SP bullet & the 110 gr. HDY JRN bullet.
100 gr. SPR SP Bullet. Winchester case, Twist: 1:20" Primer: CCI 400, small rifle, Barrel Length: 20" Trim Length: 1.285"
Powder Mfg.: Hodgkin Powder: Lil Gun Bullet Diam.: .308 C.O.L. :1.625"
Starting Load: 14.0 grs. Vel., (ft/s): 2,032 Pressure: 26,700 CUP
Max load: 15.0 grs. Vel., (ft/s): 2,132 Pressure: 28,300 CUP
110 GR. HDY JRN Bullet. Same specs. as above.
Starting Load: 14.0 grs. Vel., (ft/s): 1,998 Pressure: 28,000 CUP
Max. Load: 15.0 grs. Vel., (ft/s): 2,064 Pressure: 29,800 CUP.
Have you, or anyone out there used this powder, & if so, what do you think of it. I haven't loaded for the carbine since about 1971, & can't locate my loading data. At the time, I was using Speer 110 gr. JSP bullets, Can't remember what powder, but the Lyman & Speer loading handbooks showed about 2,100 f.p.s. muzzle vel., just slightly above military spec. for the standard jacketed military bullet. My reloads were very accurate at 100 yds. on paper from a rest, & I shot a groundhog that was sunning himself at his hole, between the eyes at a paced off 197 paces, from resting on the car roof in a clover field--my best ever shot with it.
