I have shot muzzle loaders for some time but am new to this paper cartridge stuff. I have a Shiloh 1863 rifle (Farmingdale) sn 314. It is .45 cal., 30 inch barrel, about 1:50 twist, and slugs to .450/.460. Seems a strange twist rate for a conical. I need advice about what bullet size,wt., and length I should use. Totally confused.
Thanks, Chadrool

Good morning Chadool Dan will be along sometime. Just wanted to say hello to you. We have a Model 1859 Sharps caliber .54 that sits in the Vermilion County War Museum (ILLinois) while we are down south here. Started shooting it with a 40-1 dunk lubed round ball dropped down the barrel and 2F dumped on top. Shot well and a 6 inch 50 yard gong was easy to smack. Then started making cartridges with a .52 lubed ball and 2F. These shot better and much faster reloading. Have not tried the conical as did not have the mold and the RB shot so well. Now have a mold so will most likely cast with 40-1 and load as much 2F as the paper will hold. May take it out one year to pop a corn cruncher but it has to wait until a 1819 Hall .54 flinter gets used. Maybe next time up north ?? Mike in Peru

G'Day Sir and welcome. I have exactly zero experience with rolling paper cartridges. I see no reason why they would be any different than a metallic cartridge. accept that the acceptable bullet diameter for such use may be anything between bore and groove diameter. Please let us know how this goes as it will be helpful for others heading down this road. BTW I think a recently saw a mold available on ebay for the ring tailed bullet design that is correct for rolling paper cartridges.
