Ran into the local gun store to waste some time during my lunch break today, and witnessed a guy buying a brand new Shiloh Sharps rifle in 45/70. He then also proceeded to buy 5 boxes of Hornady Leverevelution ammo. Make my heart break to see him buying that crap to shoot in that fine rifle.

He didn't care. Said he would only shoot the rifle a dozen rounds a year anyway.

Greetings Some individuals resist the learning curve no matter how much they might benefit. Hopefully "new owner" takes good care of the Shiloh so some one down the path can enjoy it in good used condition. Mike in Peru

Sometimes Life will amaze you, I'll wager 3:2 that one cannot walk into any ammo seller with 15 miles of here and leave with 5 boxes of LeverRev.45/70 ammo..AND we have a Cabela's and a Sportsmans Warehouse inside that boundary..!!

I well remember a certain bullet caster, who once lived in Delta Junction, Alaska, that told me in 2006, "Anything other than a .45-70 is . . . ." well you get the thought picture! Grand c'trdige it is. Feeding 7 carbines/rifles in .45 2 1/10. 90%+ of the bullets that go downrange are cast bullets...with BullShop cast bullets being about 80% of those! Thank you Dan. I'd come across a .30 cal ammo can of Remington 405 gr of factory bullets many years ago, so using them now n' then. For the most part, cast is what I use. Sounds like the guy will be content with what he feels he needs, with the Leverevolution ammo. We all scratch our fleas differently.....n' we all got fleas!!

As a much younger man I have used many of the 405 Rem bullets and liked them much. They seemed thin skinned so expanded well at black powder velocities. I shot a costal black tail with one fired from a 450 Alaskan built on a Siamese Mauser action and loaded full tilt and just as you might think it made quite a hole. Once I learned I could make bullets every bit as good I never bought another and now much prefer my own. I feel now that there is no better bullet for hunting with a 45-70 than a paper patch bullet of nearly pure lead. I have used such bullets to take grizzly bear, moose, and caribou and in each animal taken bullet performance was perfect with classic large mushroom lying under the hide on the off side of the animal. Two holes is nice but a lead disk the size of a quarter passing through to the off side is quite effective as well. I read that the buffalo hunters liked pure soft lead so they could recover the lead and re use it. Makes sense to me. I think that came from the book "Getting a stand" by Miles Gilbert. Say I think I know that fella from Alaska and he still clings to that beat up old Marlin 45-70 he calls B00.
