From what I understand the civilian side was way ahead of the military in the LR shooting arena. The military used the 30-06 for years as its LR go to cartridge, they used it in the 1903A4 Springfield and also in the M1D Garand. The civilian side in the first part of the 20th century (why does that sound so old and long ago now?) we’re trying different wildcats and variations of existing cartridges but from my reading the 300 H&H was pretty much the top dog and a lot of the “experts” say this was truly the first 1,000 yard cartridge of any note. Please feel free to correct any of this if it’s incorrect.

I think you are correct about the 300 H&H. Back in those early years there were not many "accurate" cases that held as much powder... excluding those European elephant busters.

I think the 30-06 was long range champ until it was aced by the 300 H&H at Wimbledon.

The 300 H&H did not show up till 1925. So yea the 06 was top dog till near 1930..
