Needing to get a mold with more holes for my 45 acp, I shoot that 1911 too much to keep up with a 2 cavity lee. So, what is your favorite design for a 45 ACP?

I saw a 4 cavity mihek mold for the 200gn HP on ebay yesterday. I think it went for about a bit over $100.00 If I have a favorite it is the Lyman 452460 or any other makers version of this design. Since my only experience with a 45 acp has been just for fun shooting this design has been easy on recoil very accurate and fun to shoot. Prolly not the best choice for a defensive bullet but an accurate design that seems to feed well from any 1911 I have tried.

SierraHunter: In days before your presence graced the earth, and before the bullet makers really got into designing the bullets being offered today, my preference for a carry load was a heavy load of Unique behind the Speer 200 gr JHP, commonly known back then as the 'Flying Ashtray' - due to the cavernous hollow point. As a hollow point requires some sort of medium (be it fluid or ?) to get it to expand as designed, the Flaying Ashtray had a large-for-the-day hollow point and would expand to about the size of a quarter ($.25) when encountering a soft medium/fluids. A secondary beneficial use of this JHP design was when the JHP encountered a hard target that would not cause expansion, the copper jacket would slightly compress on the front of the bullet/HP area, and allow the JHP to penetrate like a solid, which it now had become. So, a soft/fluid target would allow the JHP to expand to nearly quarter size; and if a hard target was encountered, the JHP would penetrate like hardball. Example: if shooting through the metal trunk of a car, this would cause the JHP to retain a hardball type of penetration, with the bullet often reaching the dashboard of the vehicle. This let you have a bit of versatility with this particular bullet. Almost forgot, velocity out of a 5" 1911 barrel was right at 1050 fps.
As for a favorite bullet these days: for general plinking/practice, the least expensive round or way to build a reload works for me.

I actually have some of those old speer bullets loaded up in 45 acp cases, and as a matter of fact that is what the gun is loaded with right now.

As they use to say long ago, "You're well heeled." with that bullet.
