Last fall I picked up a Marlin 1895 GBL rifle with some ideas in my head to convert it to a 50 Alaskan. The GBL was manufactured by Remington and has a 18” barrel with a full length 6 round tube and a pistol grip. This one seems to be one of the better examples from Remington, as the barrel seems to be threaded in straight, and it shoots very well, and functions smoothly.
However, that thought is still lingering in the back of my head about how nice it would be to have a light weight brush gun with the muzzle energy equivalent to a full speed locomotive, so I’m back to reading about it.
The early marlin 1895s seem to have used the same barrel threads as the 336, and is not suited for the 50 Alaskan without. Rebarrel. However, it seems like Remington decided to use the heavier thread shank on their rifles, and I should be able to just send the rifle to JES for a rebore.
However, from there I really have no idea what kind of project I’m getting myself into. I’m guessing I will have to open up both the loading gate and ejection port to work with the fat 50 caliber cartridges. I might have to see if I can find a 50 AK dummy round to see what all would have to be done to make it work in the marlin. I’m sure the lifter will also need to be heavily modified.

There are several you tube programs that cover it fairly well. You may want to check the JES web sight as I think he upped his barrel rebore price.

I dont have any 50 AK stuff left as your brother Nathan expressed a desire to have ours so we gave it to him with all accessories. I just recently contacted Jess to ask about a re-bore to 50-90 and he said it would be $250.00 BTW I believe I still have the 50 AK reamer I sent to Jess for the first 50 AK conversion he ever did. I guess he liked the idea because shortly after he started offering it as a regular conversion. That one was on one of the Navy Arms 45-70 conversions on the Siamese Mauser. In the Mauser platform the 50 AK can be loaded with some awfully stout loads. That is the gun I often packed while timber felling in the South East Alaska islands.

Most of the company’s I’ve talked to about doing the conversion do a rebarrel. Wild West guns no longer offers 50 Alaskan conversions after they had a disagreement with JES, but they were doing rebores and were using him for the work, so I guess he would probably be the guy to talk to.

We went with JES as I wanted to keep the original octagon 26" barrel attached as we wanted the extra weight and length. I am happy we did. Back then JES was less than a new 26" would have cost. Today a new barrel may not be as much as a rebore especially with a newer rifle.

You may want to consider this option for a .50 caliber round with your Marlin. Take a read. PLENTY of .500 S&W bullets out there to choose from. Look at their .50 B&M Alaskan cartridge information. www.b-mriflesandcartridges.com/default.html
