Yesterday we got in trade a new old SMLE #1 MK-3 in 303 Britt. Its a rework by Golden State arms to a wana be Jungle carbine. Its a pretty nice little carbine in very good condition. Since the #1 models originally had the rear sight mounted on the barrel and the original jungle carbines' were built on the #4 with the receiver mounted peep sight GSA did some shifting by putting solid for-end top wood without sight cut out and mounted a Lyman target peep on the receiver. I can live with that ! Front sight is even less original than the JC with a conventional ramp with dove tail.
All in all a fair piece with what looks like a new barrel. A quick check at the muzzle with a 311332 with a .3015 " nose diameter had a little wobble so looks like an actual .303" bore which is correct with the Britts using bore diameter as caliber designation for their cartridges.
This trade came about in an unusual manner in that it was not through our store . I accepted it as a partial trade on a buzz saw that because of a change in wood vehicles made the saw no longer needed.
Two years ago we upgraded our firewood truck that is much larger and hauls a much bigger load than the previous truck. The bed on this truck is 14'long x 8' wide x 4.5' high and is also much higher off the ground. In our previous system we hauled 8' logs then cut them into stove length at home on the buzz saw. With the bigger truck its too hard to load logs so I am sawing into stove length on site. We haul about three cord on this truck which makes for quite a days work.
My crew Tina and the girls and myself make a day of it by bringing supplies to cook a good hot lunch to finish out the long hard day.
By the end of the load my crew is about to mutiny but so far they have stuck it out.
Since we drive 60 miles one way to get our wood I hate to head home unless the truck is full. There always seems to be some disagreement on what I think is full and what they think is full but so far my will has prevailed and we load until another piece will fall off. The girls pretty much do all the loading while I am sawing but right at the end to get that last tree I help load but with each piece I whimper in pain then say its OK I'm all wright and that seems to help motivate them to finish. Let me tell ya its not easy for a guy to keep an all girl crew in line so trickery is a motivational tool. Should I be ashamed ?
Anyway I have this new to me carbine to try today. Last night I loaded some ammo with our NEI 165gn RN-GC with a light loado.8.5gn Alliant-E-3. My books show a " most accurate load " from a previous 303 rifle with this bullet and 8.5gn Red Dot . Since I was overcome by a bout of laziness and I had E-3 in the powder hopper and both powders are very close in burn rate I just went with the e-3. We shall see!
