Over the summer, my wife got a standard poodle puppy. I was not a fan of the idea at first, but over time she has grown on me. She is about 5 months old now. I shoot around the house all the time and she has never shown any kind of negative reaction, but has never been outside while I was shooting.
Had to walk out back this evening and get a tool from my tool box that’s stashed back there. Per usual, the dog wanted to go with me I always carry a gun when I walk back there, and this time I had my Bolt action 22 with me. Found a squirrel back on my tool box and popped him. I turned around to see the dog hovering about a foot off the ground, tail straight out, and it appeared she was using her over sized puppy ears to obtain lift, traveling at such a rate of speed that she was leaving a wake in the show behind her heading straight back for the house.
Guess she might be a little gun shy.....

I think it is the supersonic crack that gets them. That sonic impulse would be 50x to a dog that has never been up close to it. Then there is the high pressure wave that slaps their senses silly. Double whamys always produce spectacular results.
