Anyone going to use a muzzle loader this hunting season ? I was all planned out to pop a few corn crunchers this fall with a 1819 Halls Rifle then a standard flintlock but we are not going to get out of Peru this year.

Sorry to hear that. I was wondering if that might happen. Since we have a ML only state land section about 700 yards away I am keeping one handy/ready. Dont know what it will be though but I do have a fondness for our 58 cal Enfield 3 band rifle. It is heavy but shoots good. Other options are TC Renegade - 54 , Lyman Plains - 45, or TC Encore 209x50 Of the lot I like the Enfield best.

Nice thing about that 58 Enfield is you will have enough gun no matter what you lay the sights on.

1 in 48" for the cva flintlock and a 1 in 28" for the tc encore.
if i were to go ball and patch it would be a 1 in 66" but a 1 in 48" is fine too.

For Whitetail deer here in Ohio, in ML season,(and before the .45-70 was legal, I use one of my T/C Hawken .50 caplock rifles. I have my origonal one equipped with a Bushnell BP model 3 X 9 scope, & the other with the factory open sights. The 3 rd one also was .50 cal., but I bought a .45 cal. barrel & switched it out. I haven't done much shooting with it, to get an accurate load yet. I use T/C's MaxiBall's exclusively in them, whth 2F Goex powder. The longest kill was 85 yds, & the shortest at about 25 yds.

If my thinker is correct all the early rifles were twist for RB. The 54's were 1-66 or so.

I have a very early Lyman 45 cal plains rifle. It looks nothing like their current plains rifles. This one is stocked in a very light blond wood and has lots of brass hardware. There current rifles use very dark wood with only blackened steel hardware. They offer the current rifles in two twist rates a slow for ball and faster for conical. I dont know what to expect with the old 45 caliber rifle. I shot it a wee bit when I first got it but not much. It shot a patched ball well and it also shot a Lyman hollow base minie well. I recently picked up a mold for a 45 caliber hollow base full wadcutter bullet design. It drops at .461" from the mold. So far I have only shot it with BP in a 45-70 and it shot well from out to 50 yards. Like all wadcutters it does best at about 25 yards but out to 50 pretty good. I sized some all the way down to .448" and since it has very wide lube grooves there seems to be no issue with that much sizing. They will also size to .452 - .454" for use in revolvers. I think it weighs about 290gn. I weighed one but cant remember for sure. Anyway should be quite a versatile bullet. It could also be used like the old FBI load in the 38 special using a hollow base wadcutter inverted with the open end forward. I guess you all have figured that I will just have to try that. It makes one awfully large hollow point.
