A heads up for anyone looking to stock up on rifle powder. Surplus WC-842 has become available again through the regular sources. In addition to the regular sources it is being sold on Gun Broker in 16 pound lots but is being auctioned. This source has sold several thousand pounds so now the market is becoming saturated.
The source keeps numerous auctions constantly running so if you watch them you can eventually get it at your price. I did this by continuously adding to my watch list so I could easily monitor prices and just at the close of auctions win or loose at my price. Eventually after a couple weeks I won at my price which was $12.00 per pound shipped.
This is a ball powder intended for the 7.62 NATO. It has roughly the burn rate equivalent of H-335 so a very useful burn rate for a very wide range of rifle cartridges.
My first test with it was this week and also with a new to us rifle a Husqvarna small ring chambered in 9.3x57. I will have much to say about the rifle and loads later as I hope to dedicate a new thread to the rifle, the cartridge, and bullets for the Americas in them. For now I will only say about the rifle that it must be the most unfinicky rifle I have ever loaded for. It seems to shoot good with about any reasonable load combination without any changes to POI. Its just too easy.
As for the powder I tried 35.5gn of H-335 with our 280gn round nose gas checked bullet and this fine rifle put 4 out of 5 in a single raged hole with one of the 5 perhaps half a bullet hole away. I then tried the same charge of WC-842 at 33.5gn and another 5 shots went into the same group of I would say less than 2" total for all 10 shots.
I should clarify that the shooting was from 50 yards, this because the rifle wears a Weaver 1x to 3x variable scope so a bit tough to center that bullseye from 100 yards. I have not yet chronographed this load with either powder but hope to Lord willing soon.
Anyway a good powder at a good price if your willing to work at it a bit.
