i've been thinking about getting a c&r license. i like old rifles, preferably the 91 - 98 mausers, but i'll take the swedes, springfield armory, mannlicher and whatever else. my complaint is the fees that the ffl charges. the fee is $20-50 per rifle(1898 and up). i found a guy that has the ffl and he charges $20 per rifle. i could do the c&r for $30 for 3 years, instead of $20 per rifle. i know i'll have to get a book to record the rifles i buy. smile.amazon.com/Firearms-Ac...3244024&sr=8-4one question that i have is this........ i have a 98 mauser that was built in 1944. it has an original barrel but it was d&t to put on a redfield aperture sight. its stock is not the original, but its a fajen or bishop stock. the rifle serial numbers are all the same. i paid $20 to the ffl dealer (also i paid $120 for the rifle). is it a c&r license rifle?

I believe yes as long as the original chambering is unaltered.

Todd, I've had a C&R for the last 7 years (on my 2nd renewal license). It is great. Now be aware that not all people/dealers/auction houses will ship to a C&R. I've even been told "I only ship to real FFLs) Now that is about as asinine as you can get. Some people don't understand and/or won't take the time to understand that a C&R is an 03 FFL while regular dealers are an 01 FFL. With auction houses I find that there is a wide spread variation in what they will ship and not ship to a C&R. Some hold strictly to the BATF definition. Others will ship something that's only resemblance to original is the action design. All you can do is ask. I will sometimes ask and let them know it affects my bid limit since I might have to pay a transfer fee. I had one major auction house require an 01 FFL (means I was out $25) for a 1885 Winchester that was made in the first year. It is an antique and didn't even need a FFL. So arm yourself with the idea that you won't get anything other than the legal definition of C&R shipped and then ask/hope for the best. I bought a Remington 760 that the seller wanted an 01 FFL for. I sent him the reference data from the Remington site explaining the barrel date letters and explained the rifle was 52 years old therefore eligible to go to an 03 C&R. He sent it to me. Look at it this way, two guns in three years puts you ahead of the game. Get one and enjoy. You will also find many of the large online sales places offer a discount to C&R holders. Thaine

i got c&r license this june. the auction house that i deal with does take a c&r and soon i'll be in possession in my c&r first rifle. my gun dealer does not like me now. i was paying $25 for each gun(1898-1950s), now its $30 for 3 years. my next rifle(whatever it is) will cover the cost and then some.
