Picked this guy up in a trade here last night. As best as I can tell, it is a Smith & Wesson safety hammerless 3rd model. It is chambered in 38 S&W. I'm 90% sure the nickel plating is not original, nor the pearl grips. One of the giveaways to me on the plating is that the side plate does not sit down flush. It is visually higher then the frame, and easily felt with a fingernail drug across it. Chambers are in good shape, but the bore is lightly pitted right in front of the forcing cone. The gun does lock up nice and tight though, and everything seems to work as it should, although the trigger is absolutely terrible. I was able to dig around in my stuff and find 9 rounds of ammo, and fired them at 10 yards off hand. That's about as well as I can shoot a pistol, so I'm hoping it turns out to be a decent shooter.

Good morning Looks like it will get the job done. The finish looks OK... not wavy or blotched. WE have one in Blue. Found annealing the case necks gave a better gas seal so the "blowback" gets eliminated. Seems like we had to get a fat mold for it also.. But they are fun to use and will dispatch all sorts of critters close in.

Does the 38 S&W use a heeled bullet like some of the Colt cartridges or is the 38 S&W just a shorter version of the 38 special ?

Good Morning Almost everyone came to our 7am service... was 42 (degrees) inside. Happily the corregated roof heats fast and some of the heat trickles down.
38 SW (at least ours needs a .362 PB 200gr to shoot decent. A .358 HB is OK but the full .362 40-1 fills out the cylinder and grips the .361+ groove well. Red dot / Bullseye worked the best as it gives that "wack" to the slug in the base. Possibly other revolvers cut with old worn reamers were tighter. But like all firearms do the math first and all the rest is so much easier / fun with cast.

The 38 S&W does not use a heeled bullet. It does however actually take a bigger bullet, since they were bored at. 360" instead of. 358". Case diameter is .388" versus the .379" of the 38 special/38 short colt. The rim is also .004" thicker, and slightly bigger around.
The 38 short colt ammo I have is not loaded with healed bullets and has a case diameter the same as the 38 special. Case length is the same as the little S&W. Out of curiosity I tried shooting a short colt in the gun, and it fired fine, with no noticable case bulging. I have fired quite a bit of short colt ammo out of my model 10-6 as well as my wife's Taurus 85. Makes for good low noise plinking.
