This has been slipping away from me so procrastination period is over. The second annual Billy Dixon shoot will be scheduled for July 7. Put it on your calendar and make plans for a fun day shooting.
Course of fire is 48 shots total. Eight shots from each range of 800, 900, 1000, 1100, 1200, and 1500 yards. Five of the eight are for score and three for sighters. Score shots can begin at any time with a hit but once score shots begin the five total score shots must be consecutive.
Hits will score 1 point at 800, 2 points at 900, 3 points at 1000, 4 points at 1100, 5 points at 1200, and 6 points at 1500 yards. Any contested shots get a do over. Highest score wins.
Free camping at our place or at the range which is 8 miles from our place.
There will be no firearms restrictions . You can shoot your Barrett 50 if you wish. There are no sight restrictions. You can use your 50x Nightforce is you wish.
There is no powder restriction. You can burn any fuel that wont blow your head off.
There is but one rule so rule shy folks be at ease. The one rule is cast bullets only
There is also one request to reserve alcohol consumption to the BS sessions after the shooting is done.
Hope to see yall there!

Good morning Dan I like your rules ! I trust our Father will permit me to be there one day. Next year we will be north again. I recon I need to be thinking what "Main Gun" to be using. If I could get a Patton Tank with either the 105mm or the 90mm and a good calibrated sight system I know I could plug those targets knowing the distance. But I do think a 25 pound lead slug just might cause target failure.
I guess from what we have right now in the box the 1885 (jap) in 375 H&H with a pointy 320 or so grainer. That is one fine shooting rifle out to 300 meters which is all I have in east ILLinois.

Brother Mike our rules might be a wee bit deceptive. At first glance it will appear to folks that they might have an edge using the same scoped high power rifle they use for long range shooting with high velocity jacketed bullet loads. That type of rifle may do very good shooting to 2000 yards when loaded with high velocity jacketed bullet loads. Now when we apply our single rule it completely changes the field in that many of these rifle when subjected to the velocity limits of cast bullets will run out of sight adjustment long before reaching our 1500 yard target. Here is a for instance, I shoot a 308 Win long range with cast bullets. The rifle has a SWFA scope mounted in a 20 minute canted base and the reticle has 8 mills of usable sighting range below the cross wire. I think the SWFA scope has 18 minutes of adjustment on either side of zero. With this rifle shooting 200 to 220gn cast bullets in the area of 2000 fps mv it takes all the adjustment the scope has as well as maxing out the reticle to get to about 900 yards and to get to 1000 yards I have to hold below the reticle with no reference point other than a center line. Unless you using a very expensive scope with about 30 minutes of elevation either side of zero you are going to run out of adjustment at about mid range of our target ranges from 800 to 1500 yards. That is why I welcome and rifle scope arrangement because even guys shooting an expensive 338 Lapua with an expensive Nightforce scope will not score on about three of the targets when limited to our one rule. The guns that will make the cut are the period correct rifles set up with long range sights and is really what we prefer. Shooting an 1874 Sharps 45-90 last year with a mid range sight staff with about 300 total pointes of adjustment (1" of staff = 100 points) I could reach the 1200 yard target with the mid range staff. To reach the 1500 yard target took about an additional 70 points adjustment so I had to switch to a tall staff with over 400 points total adjustment. The tall staff got me to 1500 yards with plenty of adjustment left to go a couple hundred yards further. So the way I see it is that period correct rifles and sights are not a handicap here but a distinct advantage over modern high power rifles when both are restricted to cast bullets only. That one rule evens the field in an equipment race!

Howdy Dan The 1885 I mentioned is shot with a cast slugs. The wonder I have would be to use our 3F load (about 90 grains) or a du-plex load. Well I have 16 months or so to ponder it all. Stay super-sonic or just start out below... That transition phase can mess up flight. Have to dig into ballistics tables and see what can be. The sight on it will need some help as I doubt it will range beyond 800 yards. May have 3 inches adjustment on it. Have to dig in my sight box... maybe we have a taller staff in there.

Another factor involved is sight radios. The shorter the sight radios the longer the range that can be achieved with any given rear sight staff height. The Sharps I was shooting has a 28" barrel so sight radios is shorter than what most folks are shooting for BPC. That is why I was able to get to 1200 yards with the mid range staff because my sight radios is shorter than most.

Pretty sure the 1885's come with a 28 inch. But yes the distance from rear to front sight does change everything. Have a 33 inch tube on our 45-90 Roller and the same rear sight does not elevate near as much as it does on the 1885.
Could mount a plumbob angle indicator on the barrel and an off set windage gauge. Would need an assistant gunner though to read the barrel angle.

Daniel, what will the time limit be for the 8 shots on any 1 target?

Hadn't thought about it. Don't expect more than a couple folks to show so likely wont be a problem. Could be a problem if ever we get a larger crowd but don't expect that will ever happen. If I am the only shooter I might cheat a little to get a bragging score to write about.

I usually listen to the little angel me on my shoulder but I have to confess the little devil guy on the other side sometimes gets my attention.

It is my extreme displeasure to have to announce that the second annual Billy Dixon shoot was very likely the last due to the theft of the steel buffalo. Apparently that sheet of quite expansive hardened steel standing on that distant hillside was just too great a temptation for someone. It was on public land so I have no recourse but to bite the bullet. It is very unlikely that I will be able to afford a replacement so looks like an end to the event. We are considering a large wood frame with paper target but at this time are un-committed. A target lacking audio feedback for hit confirmation just seems to reduce the thrill factor but then shooting paper is better than not shooting at all. We shall see.

About how much did that big chunk of steel weigh?

Something close to 300 pounds.

At the range of 1500 yards would any cast bullet still have enough momentum to damage plain cold rolled ? I ask as I would be willing to help replace the target. But at 300 pounds that certainly would be a handful to have to move to storage and replace for the shoot. For practice a 6 foot square white cloth could be placed on that spot with a Go Pro or another similar system set up to give a visual record of impact.

Since each contestant gets up to eight consecutive shops from each range its a pretty simple matter to scoot to the target on my little dirt bike to confirm hits . A wood frame paper target should be fine for that. I greatly appreciate your generous offer for financial assistance but I have to decline. I feel that the situation may well repeat itself if given opportunity. It is on BLM land but some local ranchers run cattle there. Judging from the vehicle tracks I found the steel was discovered when a ranch hand was putting out mineral blocks. They always put the blocks in the same locations so its very likely to be discovered and taken again. With a wood frame paper target there would be little incentive to molest the target.
