Made it up onto the Continental Divide/Montana, this afternoon, trying out a couple of Bull Shop 6.5mm cast bullets: Lyman 266469 and Lyman 266673
Carbine used: Swedish M94/14 CARL GUSTAFS GEVARSFAKTORI 1907, 17.7" barrel; 14" military iron sight radius; matching numbers, have bayonet.
The M94/14 is a fine carbine for carry in the woods: short, nicely balanced, stout, accurate and more than adequate for most woods use.
Shooting positions: sitting in bed of pickup, with a rug laid across the bed rail, for most shots. No nice bench rest out there in the woods ya know!
Had to climb the opposite ridge to get about 95 yards away for some shots. At the 95 yard mark sat on the ground, putting elbows on drawn up knees.
The military 'V' rear sight notch and inverted 'V' front sight post tend to cover a chunk of the target that far away!
Performance with 70 year old eyes, 14" radius military open sights, first time loads: very pleased with beginning load work.
"The loads shown below are 'my' loads and have worked in 'my' carbine, not responsible for anyone's use of these loads."
Lyman 266469:
143 gr as cast, seated to an overall length of 3.0", 10.5 grs Unique, ? fps.
I thought may have detected a slight tipping with 266469 at 50 yards, so climbed the opposite hillside to about 95 yards away.
3 shots showed no signs of tipping, holes nicely round on target. Need more load work, 'bout 5" group.
Perhaps from a solid bench rest it would tighten up some (hey, it's not ME ya know!!).
Lyman 266673:
157 gr as cast, seated to an overall length of 3.08", 13.2 grs 2400, +/- 1500 fps (chronograph not used).
Quite pleased with the 266673 bullet and load. Longer length of 157 gr bullet potentially 'more friendly' and approximates closer the length
for which these Swedes were designed for: 1 turn in 7.87".
Had other rifles out today, but wanted to report on how the 6.5mm Bull Shop bullets have started performing: just fine. Thank you Dan.
Only thing missing that would have topped off the afternoon was one of BS Mom's home made pies!
