Interested in NOE's #379-279-FN 2 cavity PB Brass (379449) for my C. Sharps 1885 Highwall in .38-55. It's got a 30" Green Mountain barrel with a 1:14 twist. If you cast one, I'm wondering how well it casts and what kind of performance you've experienced if you have a similar firearm.

I don't have that mold but do have a 1/14" twist 38-55. In my rifle I found that the Lyman Postell design at about 335gn and launched at about 1200 fps was shooting very well at 100 yards but was becoming unstable before reaching 500 yards. I then started using an NEI design for a 320gn RNGC but shooting them without the gas checks and this bullet being slightly shorter than the Lyman was remaining stable to 800+ yards. This is the combo BS Jr. used in a long range gong shoot at Amadon ND to win the Jr. class honors when he was just a wee sprout. I also used this rifle with a 300gn tapered design from NEI to win a postal match. This tapered design is for breach seating and is how I loaded it for this match firing the 10 shot string using a single indexed case. My 10 shot 100 yard group was about .75" and I did keep a copy of that target if you would like to see it. I had to send in the original for the match but I made a copy for my records. We have quite a good selection of other designs in 38 cal and all seem to work well with this twist. Bullet length was an issue for long range but we got that figure out between the 335gn Lyman Postell and the 320gn NEI. This has been my experience with my rifle and talking with other folks with even slower twist barrels seems to not quite agree with their experience but that is what makes shooting interesting.

Thanks for the response. Hadn't really wanted to push that heavy a bullet, and at this point I'm only shooting at 50yds. Would love to use this rifle for target work at longer ranges, but doubt I'd ever get the chance to shoot much farther than I can here at my own range.............which is 100yds.

Guessing that the 379-279 means .379" diameter and 279gn. If so that bullet should be fine with your 1/14" twist barrel at any range you may try it. My rifle is an original 1907 RB with a modern 375 cal barrel. I size bullets to .377" for it and seems to work good.

The rifle I'm working with is my C. Sharps 1885 Highwall. I have to size to .377" also. It slugs at .3762".

Nice rifle! What kind of wood is it stocked with? I have a similar scope set up on my 38-55 for testing loads. The sights I use when using iron sights are the first run from what used to be Parts Unknown. Very nice sights that have 1/10 minute adjustments.

Thanks. It's made from Curly Maple..........probably my favorite wood to work with in my business, when I was in business. ( www.chrischristenberry.com ) However, I'm not really fond of the color. I may change that some day. For now, I'm just trying to get the rifle to shoot where I want it to. The Lyman STS was one of those things I "just had to have". Beautiful scope, but I really prefer my MVA sight. The STS keeps me from having to use a spotting scope on my table. I'll go back to the MVA once I get close to where I'm trying to get with my loads and bullets.

We are for real and we answer every business email we get every day accept Sabbath day. If you have emailed us and we received your email then it has been responded to. If you did not receive the response you should try checking your spam folder. If your email requests us to fill out a form to respond to your email sorry but we do not do that. You don't see a phone number because I am hearing impaired so do not use the phone. The phone is also a distraction from my casting so choose not to use it for that reason as well. If you will PM me I will be happy to take your order.

I believe I scored 4th place in that match using the rolling block when I was 9. I may have scored higher if my sights had not been sabotaged.
