Well I think its time you all met old ugly. No not me the other one. Ole ugly is a name we have affectionately given to our Marlin 1894 in 357 magnum. The name was chosen for obvious reasons as you shall see. Anyway in this I feel the need to be a representative for positive application of cast bullets that so far have gotten a bad rap. 4given has shown dismal results in his gun with the cast bullets he used but so far here no one has shown any good results. So for that reason today in-between pots of lead melting I hung a target, grabbed old ugly and a box of ammo. No cherry picking here just what was on hand. I set up at 50 yards and fired the one group and got back to work before the mussus could think I was having fun instead of working. This group is representative of what we have come to expect from old ugly. Please also note that this 50 yard group was fired using the factory buckhorn sights and factory front bead sight. I felt it was important to show that the Marlin 357 magnum can shoot cast bullets well. This for the sake of new folks just beginning to learn. The load combination is written on the target. I mean no offence to anyone but really felt the need to represent my avocation in a positive light. Click on the pictures to enlarge . Attachments:

Good morning Dan and Ol Ugly We have a 1894 Marlin Mio-groove in 357. It shoots well with cast. But without my load notes I cannot give any good load info. But I do know we had issues until we started loading 002+ over groove using softer cast and slamming the base will a healthy dose of Unique. What we loaded was the fattest cast the chamber will load and eject still loaded.
Cannot call it a tack driver but any ground hog at 50 yards and under that I can see the shoulders is going to have a rough morning getting back to its den. The Ranch Dog 357 mold is pretty much all I use anymore It does all I need and sadly was not available 20 some years ago when we sure could have used it.
Your Ol Ugly looks like a work in Progress. Some paint stripper and a good application of apple vinegar will do that barrel shine some good if it is carbon steel.

I guess I forgot to mention that the bullet use for this is the newer Lee 358-200-RF-GC. It is basically a copy of the RCBS 35-200 FN GC which also shoots good in our rifle. I have had the RCBS mold for many years but when Lee came out with their version in a six cavity I got one. The RCBS is a two cavity. The Ranch Dog at 190gn also shoots equally well for us. All are sized to .360" diameter. This gun is also partial to light loads with light bullets in the 125gn range and also in the RF design. The Lee 125 RF and a very similar design we have from NEI both shoot very well at what I will call small game velocity up to about 1300 fps. These plain base designs shoot well at chamber pressures appropriate to their design. So mission accomplished in that now maybe folks new to shooting a 357 magnum lever gun wont get the wrong idea and completely forgo at least trying cast bullets. You cant really come to any definitive conclusion without trying. Oh BTW old ugly has a stainless barrel. When we got the gun we discovered the original barrel had a bulge. We sent it to Marlin and all they had on hand was SS and there could be quite a long wait for blued so stainless it is. No regrets there but it seemed like maybe the break in time was pretty long.

Every rifle is different that is for sure. I would bet that with the right cast bullet, my rifle would shoot well too. All you folks in the audience should keep in mind that I only tried two bullet diameters in my microgroove barrel; .358 and .359. It is likely that a .360 or a gas checked cast bullet would have worked just fine. While we are on the subject, I wouldn't mind trying something gas checked 158 - 160 gr with a wide meplat. You have something that might work for me Dan? BTW, Old Ugly is pretty cool.

Anyone interested in checking our full current inventory list can go to bullshop.weebly.com and scroll to the -more- icon at the top right of the page. The caliber list will drop down and you can then search the list by caliber. I think we are approaching 300 entries on the list. The list continues to grow so check in from time to time.
I should add that ours is a custom service where you get choices in bullet alloy hardness, diameters, and lube type.

I figured my handle would ring a bell, Dan. Guess it has been too long since I put together one of those pictures.

We have a lot more to offer now than then. You can check our current list at bullshop.weebly.com by scrolling to the more icon at the top right of the page. Its mostly complete accept for a couple new molds that we cant seem to access the site to add them. The 460 NEX as designed by the DWB's is by far our best selling conical for ML. Thanks!

I think the thing is it never got the publicity the 460 NEX got. You know how it is that there are more followers than leaders. Most folks cant recognize a good thing on their own but follow what others are talking about and the 460 NEX gets talked about a lot. If anyone asks my opinion I usually include your UC short in the line up. We now have an original Andela Tool Co. mold for the original .504 White super slug and that one gets the nod too.
